I'm not going to disagree that the review did seem a bit one-sided but it sure brought back memories of the one and only time I played that particular league. It's not entirely unfair in that particular case to say "well geez this is terrible" and leave it there.

Something else to consider..

I'd like to hear benny the cunt talking less about himself :)

Nothing wrong with reviewing the Adelaide Champs, you mentioned other players in the field that the pub poker players will know and they may have wished to hear some more about how they went. Easy to say afterwards and all that but for the next event of that type would it be possible/realistic to get some sort of update from other players and just make a quick note or something so can then elaborate for the next podcast?

It may help if there's some sort of "give us a shout-out if you're playing in <event x>" in the days before the event and then someone can maybe even do it for you if your preference at the time is to concentrate on playing. I hear old-man daryl would love to :)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

i actually dont mind this idea, but this would require some degree of preparation, which, at the moment, is a bit hard for me. I am flat out at the moment. if i hadn't already bought into the tourney i prolly wouldn't have played the adelaide champs. that should be better for me in the future though when i am a bit less busy. add to that, i didn't' actually know that the other pub players were even there until the event was playing.

so maybe next time i can try and suss out who else is playing and then get them to keep us updated on the rail facebook page or something like that

That'd work, or twitter may be easier for quick updates. I'm sure there's something out there that let's you update both at once. Then you'll know roughly who's done what and that'll give you an opportunity to do some interviewing (and you'll get to know who they are) ;)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Thank you.

gmatical wrote:If you were unsure about something, why not ask the TD? Not sure who is the TD, ask someone who is the TD etc.

Certainly. I’ll poke the guy in charge and get him to do his job. I was always taught from a young age, when working, to always work as if your manager was constantly observing you, that way you always work in a professional maner.

I have always noticed with 888pl staff, that if they don’t recognize a player, they will always ask if they have played 88pl before or at that venue, if the answer is no, they go on to tell them how the game works, how cards work, suggest a good meal, fill them in on what they can win that night, what tournaments they qualify for if they win and of course all the details for the Grand Final/Main Event.

Those same TD’s are ALWAYS well dressed and well presented, leaving in the players mind no doubt as to who is running the event.

All that sounds like a professional outfit to me.

gmatical wrote:What were the prizes on offer, what time did it finish, was it a good structure in the end stages of the tourney? That you didn't even bother to hang around to complete your 'review' is an indictment on your credibility, and the whole credibility of this podcast.

This is all new to us and we are still learning in every aspect – from production and “show-flow”, to our speaking voices and structure. Most of all though, we are learning content delivery and we are trying to improve as we go. In saying that, whilst we have ever only claimed to be an amateur production, our desire to become more professional in every aspect means we take everything you say on board.

The idea of our show is to have fun, and I hope you would agree, that with every show we are improving, and a lot of that is due to constructive feedback, both positive and negative, and who knows, in time we will get a whole lot better at it.

gmatical wrote:Bennymacca's review of the Adelaide Champs was great, Scott asked some good questions (seemingly in a bid to get the 'review' back on track) but the black hole of ill-informed rambling in the middle was terrible.

Not really sure benny the cunt was “reviewing” the Adelaide Champs, perhaps you need to relisten to the podcast, you appear to be all caught up in my crucifixion of the NPPL to have listened properly. I’m pretty sure I asked if Ben had played on line during our small break, he said no and went on to mention how he had played the Adelaide Champs. We then asked HIM about HIS experience playing in such a big tournament. We also asked him if had seen any other Pub players. He mentioned who he had seen that he had recognised. We asked HIM, how HE got to the Adelaide Champs. So that to me doesn’t sound like a review, that sounds like members of a podcast talking about their game. And considering we are pub players talking about a big game that most pub players don’t get to play in or at least dream of playing in, it would seem to me that people would be interested in hearing how Ben (one of the stars of the show) went in a tournament like this.

gmatical wrote:Joe blow came 6th, dont know him... Jill Jones came 5th...don't know her - why is it relevent if you know these people? You should really listen to these podcasts (or have someone who will give you honest feedback) and trim the fat to keep it sharp.

Our aim is to read out these final tables, and let everyone know who won. People like to hear their name called on the radio and that also will help build our listener base. The fact that we know some of these people is fine, we are good mates with all of these people but we know of them, and that makes it more personal. The people we don’t know, we would like to know. This is why we have Facebook and Twitter accounts set up. People can feel free to write on our wall and say (Hey, I’m Fred Blogs, I finished 7th at the Champs the other day”. We are an interactive show, we want to get to know these people. We don’t know them yet, but we hope to in the future.

gmatical wrote:If you are happy to be a few guys sitting around chatting about 888pl and your mates who play it, your are spot on.

Thanks.

gmatical wrote: But if you are aiming to produce something professional and appealling to a broader market, you are missing the mark.

Thanks for listening.

Our target audience starts local and aims to grow larger, encompassing everyone, but we have to start somewhere, we are after all 8 episodes in and hopefully improving and getting better with each one.

gmatical wrote:My review is honest, and I make no apologies for that.

Honest but slightly misguided.

As mentioned we take all feedback on board and we use it, how ever I have to admit, when I first read this post, I was pretty p*ssed.

I have since calmed down and read it for what it’s worth, you do make some valid points and we (I) will take them on board and use them to make our show better and hopefully improve the way I go about things.

Please just remember that we do this for fun, we don’t get paid, we love getting together, having a few beers and chatting about poker.

Everything in the podcast is our view, we are not supported by, paid by or instructed by poker entity.

We are, after all just mates chatting about poker, that’s how the show starts but will not be how this show goes down in history. I hope that with input from our listeners and pub poker players, we can produce a show that is both entertaining and informative.

I also invite you to come on the show and tell us all about your poker experiences, pub, on line and brick and mortar.

This is a serious invitation, I also invite you to get on to Facebook or Twitter and tell us what you would like us talk about, what things you find interesting and we’ll do our best (outside of work, uni, and family commitments) to bring a show that will please you.

Once again, though you can’t please all of the people, all of the time and you never will.

We just hope you get a laugh and it kills an hour or so of your day and puts a smile on your face.

gmatical wrote:Good luck in the future.

Thank you, that is much appreciated.

I often come off as harsh, and often I mean to be.

In this case I was frustrated that your program that began with promise is/was missing what I thought was what you were aiming for - a broad appealing pub poker programme.

If this is not your goal, that's cool - or if you are working up to it and it is you future goal - that's cool too.

I think through the niceness of human beings, and even more so your friends and peers - will be generous with positive comments. My comments were meant to help improve your podcast. I suspect you knew that you may have missed the mark with the reviews - but I also doubt that many would tell you.

Do I want to listen to it? Well, yes and no - I am interested to see how you are progressing - and the varying content you present - some of which will appeal to me, some of which will not.
I, as a listener, listened to your first few eps and liked them, i kind of lost interest in the GF broadcast for no reason I can put my finger on (possibly jealous I wasn't playing them) - and skipped the part 2 GF show completely.
It was becoming a bit '888pl-centric' and as a player with no real affiliation - i felt like you were droning on and on about good ol' 888pl too much.
If you think about it, most players are like me - play a pub poker provider at a convenient venue, on a convenient day - but are open to variety. We want to know what is happening on the other side of the fence - and expect it to be presented well and fairly. If the footy show was 100% Collingwood focused, audiences would plummet even though Collingwood has a heap of fans - the rest of the audience only has a slight interest, and will search for (and find sooner or later) an alternative.

I will not quote individual parts of your posts old man Swanky, but I was taught to ask questions when I am unsure. The NPPL is a step down in the ‘professionalism’ ranks, but there must have been some good points worth noting.

What do I want to hear on your Podcasts? Upcoming & recently concluded major events from all major pub poker providers. The experiences of yourselves (and your poker friends/forumers/staff) in larger tournaments (as this is the aspiration of many pub players.

How about a balanced review of the ‘end goal’ of all providers. Balance prize vs ease of qualification vs venue vs prestige etc.. ?
What about discussion of larger world tourneys (brief, as they are not pub poker – but still of interest.
Poker product reviews, be it a book, software, training site.
Controversy is always popular – angles people try, TD fails,
Current ‘trends’ in pub poker, moving to CBI’s, impact of law on our pastime

There is alot of things you can cover – and as i said – some will appeal to me some won’t – I have and will never rip you trying – and get that you are still starting up.

I expected you to get upset, and am glad to hear you calmed down and I hope you realised (and this post solidifies) that I was trying to help you improve, not give you hell for no reason.

I don’t Twitter and have recently ditched facebook so I will use this forum as a way to talk to you. My wife and I have been recently been blessed with a little girl so poker has slipped down my list of priorities, but I would love to be on your show to discuss poker, but perhaps when I dust off the cards again early next year.

That is another content driver – where poker fits in peoples life – from the obsessed to the randoms – what hooks us and what turns us away. Possibly too heavy, but I have recently thought about poker and its place in life (my life specifically obv.) David saab and rob reemus (pub poker player) going to jail for drug smuggling, what may have driven them, was it poker etc?.

I’m skewing off point now, better wrap it up.

Loved your music snippets (Kanye in particular obv.), keep on keeping on.

Rcon’s comment is pertenant to you guy’s – each show is its own work of art, created by your efforts and you are no doubt proud of your work – and it hurts to have that critiqued and criticised.

Okay, gotta go – if i missed anything answering anything you really wanted an answer on – repost.

Love Always,

Gmatical.
May all your pain be champagne!

this tells us we are on the right track though, because we have discussed basically all of this in terms of the show.
