A male card shark has crashed a "ladies-only" poker tournament to win nearly $24,000, taking the top prize from a breast cancer sufferer in the process.

Abraham Korotki, a Las Vegas-based poker expert whose online profile claims career winnings of over $700,000, entered himself in the event at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey by exploiting a loophole in the rules.

After paying his $345 entry fee, Mr Korotki was allowed to play despite calls of protest from the field of 269 women.

Making it to the last two remaining players, he then emerged victorious to take home $23,985 - the lion's share of the pool - as well as a trophy engraved "Ladies Champion".

Further ruffling the feathers of his female competitors was the fact that Mr Korotki turned down an offer from his ill final opponent to split the money instead of playing on.

Nicole Rowe, who is facing breast cancer surgery in the coming weeks, reportedly told him she needs the money to pay for her living expenses while she recovered.

Mr Korotki, who collected almost $500,000 for a single World Series of Poker tournament in 2006, rejected the offer.

"When you're a woman and you play poker, 99 percent of the time you're at a table with nine men," Philadelphia Daily News reported Ms Rowe as saying.

"Why did he have to ruin it for us? Why would he do this?"

Mr Korotki, a 65-year-old real estate developer, has since reportedly pledged to donate his winnings to charity but the recipient has not been identified and nor has any payment been confirmed.

Ms Rowe, a 40-year-old New York optician, took home $13,649.

Another case of equal opportunity going out the window 'cause it doesn't suit the women.
I feel sorry for the lady with breast cancer, i really do, i have lost too many people I love to cancer, but that is not the issue here, the issue is a man playing in a woman's only event. Wasn't too long ago a woman won the right to play in the PGA amongst the men siting discrimination, how many men's only events of any kind have women managed to worm their way into over the years???
Now a man does it and wins, and all of a sudden he's a prick because he won't chop with a lady because she has cancer.
I have a simple way to fix this, Men play in the Men's events in anything, Woman play in the Woman's events in anything and everyone plays in the mixed events.
HTFU girls, equal opportunity I say, and if you don't like it, give out damn MANholes back, give our PoliceMEN, FireMEN and WalkMANs back.
You know what??? Funk it, tomorrow, I'm joining a Women's only gym. Why??? Well like the girls I don't want to look at hot sweaty bulging men, i wanna look at hot chicks.
What do you think would happen if I opened a Men's only Gym??? Some chick would want in.
Stop the planet, I wanna get off!
/Rant.
:D

And if she didnt make the money she would have had $345 less to pay for her living expenses. What a stupid B*tch. Only in a womans tourney would hear a plea for a chop like that.

Whilst I don't agree with CT's choice of words, I'm inclined to agree. Relying on "potential winnings" to cover the cost of living associated with a medical condition is kind of reckless.

it looks to me like some journalistic licence was taken with that part, surely she wasn't playing poker to pay medical bills. i hope not.

while that dude may have been a tool, it does kinda highlight the double standards sometimes associated with sexism

Isn't that kind of redundant? If double standards exist, how is his participation toolish?
