My first hand played at a casino...

Postby Caleb » Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:22 pm

This was November last year, just after I was bitten by the poker bug. I had just got a $3000 tax check back, and since me and the missus of the time both worked at Skycity we figured a casino roadtrip to Crown was in order. As it was a little while ago forgive me if some of my details are a bit fuzzy.

Bought into a $2/$3 No-Limit table for Table max $200. It was a well established table with at least 5 stacks over $500. I had never played a proper cash game before and by the time I sat down I was absolutely carping myself. I realised just how out of my league I was.

I was sat down in mid-position, I paid the blind to come straight in and received [9c 3s] first hand. Laid it down with an UTG raise to $20.

Two hands later, I was 2nd UTG, look down at [kc ks]. I limped in, major mistake I know, but I wasn't thinking clearly due to me carping myself and all. There were a few more limpers, button raises to $30. Blinds & UTG all call, as do I (mistake #2) and 2 later players call also. Massive pot with 7 runners for the flop.

Flop comes out...
[kd kh 5h]

I've flopped quads. Luckily I could not react due my mental capacity at the time being that of a rock. Checked around to me. I check also. Next to act bets $75. Next re-raises to $300. Button pushes for $550. SB folds, BB pushes also for just under 1K. UTG folds.

It comes around to me. I'm sitting there, trying to figure out what the hell everyone else can have. The pot is massive. Everyone looks supremely confident. What can they possibly have that can beat me? Luckily my brain decided to kick into gear and I made the call, but I seriously took over a minute to think about it.

All others call and action is complete before the turn.

Cards are rolled. (this is where my memory gets a test)

Button: [ad ac]
BB: [ah jh]
Me: [kc ks]
Mid: [qc qs]
Late: [5c 5d] (Not sure about suits)

Massive sigh of relief from me. Quads Aces are impossible, A few quick calculations show that a runner-runner royal flush is the only hand that can beat me.

Turn comes.....
[qh]

You've got to be ****ing kidding me. BB begins acting like real tool, promising to have the dealers' babies if he puts the [10h] on the river. (They were both guys)

River comes.....
[10d]

For a split second all around the table thought it was a heart. The BB jumped up and punched the air, but stopped just before he started screaming when he realised what the card actually was. I hadn't moved from my seat at all. I just sat there with an absolutely stunned look on my face, my mouth wide open. The dealer sorted out the pots and slid me the biggest pile of $5 chips I'd ever seen. I tried to say thank you but no words would come out. It took me a few minutes to stack my chips because my hands were shaking so much. I played another lap of the table and then walked away about $1200 up.

We had a good night that night, courtesy of the generous players at the crown....

thats a great story, well told caleb, thought like i was there

yeah the crown is pretty scary with the big stacks, need to try find a table where everyone is even in chips, hate being pushed around by a monster stack

nice win

I highly doubt that If it was [ac 9c] in this story that I would've waited until now to tell it....

Yeah, accidently chose the wrong tax threshold and pay too much tax every fortnight. I was paying about $100 too much every pay without realising. Hello big payout.
