You know you were behind preflop right?

The raiser may well have been betting (or just hoping) that you didn't have an ace and/or was representing one themselves.... at least they raised preflop!

You also made a call post flop hoping that they didn't have AA or AK or AQ which could be considered a little risky still with only AJ.

i have to agree with you there pete, AJ is the most overrated hand in the poker (nothing agaisnt todd, just stating this)

with 3000 left, i prolly would have folded, depending on what the other player is like.

my advice would have been to not raise as much pre flop, so you could have got away from it when the other player put u all in.

but all in all, 3 on the river still sucks balls

Guy with the Treys raised. Would have been much worse if he had called a raise then called an all-in.

I forgot to mention the raiser might have had pocket 9's or pocket 4's too.

So we have a person who raises hard preflop and you called.

From the flop of A 4 9 they push allin.

Even just considering those cards it's feasible they are holding AA AK AQ A9 A4 99 44 (or even 94 as a bluff) as hands that are beating you. AJ suited isn't looking very flash now at all and some fairly serious consideration would still need to be made before calling.

A suggestion.... instead of just calling preflop, try pushing back. The reasons I suggest this are:-

1) The preflop raise was 6x the BB (but noticeably not allin). If this was in any kind of early position it reeks of not wanting a caller (or just having no idea). **edit** It's 3x as Scott points out below. Maths genius I am!
2) For you to call a bet of 1200 from your stack of 4200(ish) that's about 25% of your stack. If you lose, that's bad. You have AJ. AJ isn't brilliant.
3) In this example, had you re-raised allin preflop, the player with pocket 3's would be forced to decide if they wanted to commit so many chips for such an average hand and you could very well have won the pot there and then. It's realistic to say they might have thought you had a high pocket pair and folded.

I have to question what range of hands you put them on to begin with given such a large raise. I would have thought either small pair or very large pair or 2 very high cards as a starting point and then tried to narrow it down from there based on what I thought I knew of the player (if at all possible). If you at all suspected they had a high pair or 2 high cards then IMO you needed to decide if you wanted to proceed with a coin flip. Folding to such a large raise isn't going to cost you anything so perhaps that's another viable option preflop.

The pre-flop raise was 3x, not 6x.

haha it was too.... in my head I even went 4x6=24 haha what an idiot!

The point stands though, push back if you don't think their hand is that strong and you don't really want to see a flop (and you don't with AJ).
