Bad beat with dodgy passports

Postby simongee » Sat Jul 12, 2008 1:16 am

Just got home from a tournament at an unnamed new Friday 11:00 venue. Got a bad beat as follows ;

We are just after the 1st break so no more poker passports are in play. I hold K8 suited checked all around, flop comes KJ8, I have hit 2 pair, bet 500 to the left raises to 1000, folds around to me, I go all in and left of me calls. Rolls over KQ. Turn comes 2, river comes J. Left of me wins the pot with 2 pair Queen kicker as he had me out chipped. Fair enough but..........

The issue I have is that the gentleman to the left of me got both his passports stamped up after buying 1 drink. From what I understand he knows the bar staff and at least one of the TD's which apparently entitles you to a full stamp up on your cards.

I am not normally one to complain but I had been there for the first game supporting the venue by buying drinks to stamp up my passports and got both my passports stamped up legitimately in the second game only to get sucked out by some bloke that got chipped up for buying one drink.

Surely there should be some responsibility on the pub to ensure everyone gets stamped up correctly. Does anyone else think this is wrong?

Just got home from the same venue. I won't mention how I was crippled this evening (for shame Scott, for SHAME - but Muzz will love it!), but I will point you toward this thread as I think you'll find it rather applicable.

I personally don't think there is an issue with this as you've not been party to all transactions between them, but I can certainly see how you feel.

Just to confirm I was witness to the 2 non stamped passports being taken from the player by the TD to the bar and returning seconds later fully filled.

So I am well aware of the transactions or should I say lack of.

Bad luck, that's a bad beat.

Now, the stamps. Different venues (and different staff members) give different stamps for different purchases (wow, that reads weird). It sucks, but sometimes its down to who serves you. Yes, every venue should have the same stamp policy, be it 2 cards for a drink or 1 stamp - it shouldn't differ from staff member to staff member - but that's how things are. The onus is on you to tell the manager to get his staff into line. SAYING THAT...

Its the venues choice to decide how many stamps they want to give per purchase. There's no "legitimate" way. Just because NPL encourages venues to the "1 stamp per soft drink/2 per beer" (or whatever) doesn't mean every venue has to follow it.

Conversely, I got 5th tonight! Had a great time :D

Yet how many times have you told bar staff when you've been given too many stamps Xtal?

This doesn't sound particularly good, but I still maintain you've not been party to all the transactions. Nothing happens in isolation. There may have been some prior arrangement you weren't aware of (I'm not actually suggesting this happened, but rather putting forward a possibility)

That said, I can completely see how that would put you off, BUT being transparent in stamp policy, whilst desirable, is not a requirement of business that fork out hundreds of dollars every time they chose to host NPL events.

excuse me rcon ... when i leave my house to go to poker i have money to pay for drinks and dinner I dont expect to get stamped out for free
But if i get a drink and the lady or man on the other side of the bar gives me 4 stamp instead of 2
Is it up to me to tell him off??? :? :? ... I think that is the question here

But my dear Xtal, that is exactly my point. If the business chooses to stamp someone up, it is entirely their choice. How is it different to what Simon outlined above?

edit: how do you think it makes others feel when they see you taking those extra stamps and not speaking up? It doesn't bother me, as I feel venues have a right to stamp up how they chose.
