You're a Bunch of Factors

I'm new the forum, and fairly new to 888/NPL. Thought I'd introduce myself with what I thought was a pretty bad beat!

Playing online, 11pm freeroll event. Mid table. I have pocket A, A. It's early in the tournament - about 10mins in.

I re-raise before the flop, I get put all in by the chip leader who has about triple what I have which is practically what I started with.

I call his all in. He has pocket 10, 10.

Flop: K, J, nothing

Turn: A

River: Q

Giving him the A-10 straight beating my trip A's. Ouch!

Would anyone else have played that differently?

You got it all in as good as you can hope for, just damn unlucky. :/

Don't think I'd ever be playing it any differently. Sigh, and move on

Pre-flop, late position 2nd to right of dealer. Decide its time to make a move. I've got Jc, Qc.

4 callers to $50
I raise to $400. The dealer and 3rd on the left of the dealer call.

Flop: Qs, 9s, Jh.

I've gotten lucky, I'm thinking this is my chance. Checked to me. I raise another $400. Dealer puts me all in. The other one folds. I call, gleefully. He's got Kc, Qh.

Turn: Kh.

Damn. Only a 3rd J will save me...

River: 6c.

I'm out.

In retrospect, I think I was just doomed. If the J,Q hadn't hit on the flop, I would still have tried to bluff strength and win the pot - but I would have folded to an all-in call with nothing.

Did I bet enough pre-flop? Maybe not. What would you have done instead?

i am not sure i would have raised with qj when there are 4 callers, but its not a horrible play though

on the flop, the pot is around 1000 right?

if that is the case, your bet sizing should typically be between half and full pot. but in this case, since its such a draw heavy board, i would have been leaning toward a full pot bet.

with KQ he probably wasn't folding anyway, but thats not the point

You bet too much pre-flop. You raised to 8 times the BB and still got 2 callers. That should be alarm bells. KQ is a bad call there, I would fold to that. It's a good flop for you, but I would've been worried about pocket 9's here.

For you to bet and then get pushed all-in is very dangerous. Even with top 2 pair. The straight is out there. A flush draw possible. I've seen people make that move with [As Ks] many times.

All that said. I still call with top 2. Because I know players will go all in with top pair.

So, in summary. You represented strength pre-flop while you were actually dominated (Nothing wrong with that at all, your bet was a good one that KQ should've folded to), you hit the flop hard, and then the better hand pre-flop sucked out on the turn.

You played the hand better than the other player, got your money in good, yet you lost. Don't you just love poker?

One tip:
When typing out cards (eg. Kc Ad etc.) if you place [ ] around it it shows up as a picture.

[A_d] [A_c] without the underscores becomes [Ad] [Ac]. Makes posts involving hands so much easier to read.

Stealth edit: Like benny the cunt said you could've bet more on the flop looking the pot size (at least 1200), but same thing happens. KQ jams, you call.
