A bad end to a good little cash game

Postby krunchie » Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:28 pm

So last night i was playing some live 20c40c, and had run my 20 bucks up to around 60ish in around an hour.

Getting late in the night most of the players had all had their buyins donked off to 1 bloke that was clearly drunk and being uber agressive and playing any 2 cards, as well as firing on every street with little or nothing but also hitting a lot.

I had been waiting for my oppourunty to trap his ass all night and finaly the oppourtuntity arose.

I was mid postion and he was late position
my stack $50, his $98.

I get dealt [acjc] and after 2 early postion limpers i raise to $6, villan flat calls the other 2 fold.

flop comes [js 9d 2d], i decide to see if i can use his agression against him and check, as expected he lead out for $15 and i insta jam all in for my remaining $44.

He calls almost instantly and rolls [jd 4c]

turn X

River [4d] :( :(

wasnt all that upset as i know i out played him and was a great move to take a big pot but unfortunatly the bloke carried on a heap as he was drunk, so i quietly left.

Ruined a good night but still i think it was a good move

thoughts ?
Does anyone know how to make money playing uno vs 6 year olds, its about the only card game i get to play these days.

You got your money in ahead. If you can manage to do that 100% of the time, you will win more than you lose.

Keep it up.

What the guys said above is bang on. You got your money in good and got unlucky. I am a little interested on your preflop raise.

So you're playing .20/.40 and you raise to $6? Is this becuase you know you are going to get called by drunk man? What is the standard raise in the game? I would have guessed between $1.20 and $2 so $6 seems a bit much unless people were betting this much pre.

move was great if you knew he was gonna bet with his whole range.

i hate people that carry on like idiots when they suck out. it is possibly the worst thing you can do at a poker table if you ask me

trishan, in these live games, that is a standard raise!

i was expecting this question trishan

the standard opening raise was about 1.20 to 2 bucks for most of the night but towards the end it was getting a little crazy,

apart from my self on 50 odd and mr drunk on near 100, the rest of our table were on around 10-20 ( not many players at this game buy in for the correct ammount), so they were getting pushed around by his big stack.

mr drunk man had started opening for around 5 or if someone opened for 2 he was insantly re raising pre for 6, so i decided to open for 6 as i knew the only player that would call me was him as he was still calling any size raise with just about any 2 cards, such was his confidence due to the amber fluid pulsing through his veins.

ok, lets generalise this a bit more.

where did the preflop raising sizes come from? why do we raise 3-4 times the BB

lets say that we raise the top 15% of hands as a general number

in general, my theory is to raise enough that in a multiway pot, you narrow down the field so you keep only 1 player in a high percentage of the time, BUT at the same time, you want this player's calling range to be as wide as possible. in a pre preflop situation, if people call with a wider range than you are raising with, then they are making a mistake.

its a balancing act. if you raise too small, people's range remains wide, but you risk playing too many pots multiway.

conversely, if you raise too much, then this affects the other player's calling range, and it narrows it down too far to make it a reverse implied odds scenario.

3-4bb in a standard game seems to be the sweet spot in a general tight aggressive game, but in a loose passive game, the raises will often need to be higher than this (if you have played 1/2 at the casino you will know this)

what do people think?
