All of the above points are very valid.
I'll rebutt some of them, and back up a few with these tasty morsels.
Theoretically, if the NPL kept the old system, wouldn't you assume that all of the Top 50 in the state would be in their top 5 at their venues respectively? After all, they had the best true averages, the highest points.
We had a player last season, who played 45 games with a
season average of 25.71. (He did not win a tournament)
He played at 5 venues and didn't play for the first month.
He finished the season in 8th, 10th, 12th, 33rd and 36th at these venues that had a combined average of 120 registered season players.
He also finished 4th overall in the region which has 700 registerd players.
Yet he didn't get to go to the state finals.
He would have under this current system.
Just for the record, this season, after starting on par with everyone else.
He has played at 6 venues this season
He is ranked 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th (only 6 games @ venue) and 10th (only 7 games @ venue)
He has won 5 tournaments and is 1st in the region, 18th in State.
Under the old system, he would be 12th on points in the state and nowhere near the Top 50 on average.
________________________________________________
The debate about larger venue numbers being unfair with averages compared to smaller venues, consider this -
20 runners - you came 5th (top 25%) points = 25
50 runners - you came 12th (top 25%) points = 30
100 runners - you came 25th(top 25%) points = 10
That is why the sliding scale works, its easier to make the points with lower participants, and you are duly rewarded with big points in the larger Tournys.
_______________________________________________
Back to the State averages, how about this?
How about SUBTRACTING 10 points for every tournament you DIDNT place in?
That way if you've played say, 70 tournys, and placed 33 times.
You would take your best 25 finishes, no penalty for the other 8 placings, but you would have 370 points deducted from your tally, this would bring your averages per game more into alignment.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I think it is good the way it is.
You don't have to make the top 50, only top 5 at a (yes, 1) venue and don't forget that if a top 50 is in the top 5 at a venue, they are taken out of the venue and number 6 qualifies.
Seems pretty fair to me.
You don't have to play at 7 different venues.
It's just an ego trip to be in the top 50.
ps I am in the top 50 and 1 and 2 at two venues.
(just had to stroke my own ego there !!!!!!)

Nope, I wouldn't assume that...you're assuming every1 has a regular venue....
25.71 was good enough for quite a while last season and the player you mention was unlucky to miss out...but it's nobody elses fault this player started later in the season.
I suggest having a look at the actual averages for quite a few of the current top 50....25.71 is still very good and better than a lot of them.
One point of view that I refuse to buy is to do with players protecting their averages by not playing once they have say...25.00 or better. If they stop playing....then miss out...buy some shares in kleenex cos if you miss out from choosing to not play it's nobody's fault but your own. I'd also say it's much more likely they won't try this tactic again due to being burned previously.
BUT - having said all of this.....Garth did mention that it was never stated the top 50 was to be a reflection of poker ability. We've all just (perhaps rightly) assumed this.
Beats me why it's even there if that's the case....but there we have it
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

The Cougar wrote:Ah just finished another game and as you would expect, The Cougar places again, can't wait to see what my B/S average is now!!!
Played 25 games and comes into Top 50 at #56. Plays 26 games and up to #48. 27 games and #40 ???? Who knows?
I won't be able to sleep tonight waitng for my B/S average and Top 50 position to be posted tomorrow.
I'm sorry but the gloves are off- the current format is a joke and I take Garth's point that the Top 50 does not necessarily represent the Top 50 best players, then, what the Cougar droppings does it do. It makes very ordinary, [edited by David], poker players [edited by David] who play lots of games, feel good about themselves, when in fact they are really nothing more than Cougar droppings.
Seriously, let's get back to the REAL ISSUE. The current system is far from good let alone perfect. There has been a lot of constuctive comment about this issue, so I'm handing it back to NPL, REWARD those that play more than 25 games but don't force those that only play once or twice a week out of the game!!!
PS The Cougar is about to start playing venues where he has not been before- SO BEWARE. That's right- you could be sitting at the same table next time you play- without even knowing.
I love the thrill of the hunt.
The Barossa venues- --Nuriootpa Vine Inn- Tanunda Hotel , Angaston BrauHaus Hotels welcomes all "Barry Dawsons" -- Cougars,
,any Jack Daniels and Jimmys, a TED or two if they dare show up
we have a "Tank" to shoot down any Strays who dare !
High regards
