what about this one.

if someone averaged 35 points a game for instance, which gave him/her the best average in the state, shouldnt he also be on a venue top 5?

if he is not, then thats his own fault - too bad so sad. you gotta support the venues that are, after all, paying for us to go and play poker.

people might combat this with the "i need to work some nights" defence - please refer to the "8 games on a weekend" post to see where you can play when you are not working

pretty sure there would be close to 15 poker timeslots in a week. surely there is a single one of them that can be made regularly so that the average will actually count for something and finals can be qualified for.

just my thoughts...

Have you considered that players on say rotating shift work (perchance with a family too) or something similar might still actually play more games than a person who has one (maybe even two) regular venue(s), just not enough in one place for a top 5? It could be construed as harsh to suggest they're not supporting the NPL as much as some others.

Food for thought.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

I'm sorry guys, but we can't cater to everyone's needs. It's harder than it looks.

I read the first couple of pages of this thread and it's the same argument i brought up a couple of months ago.

I don't agree with the current system as it favours the everyday player over the once or twice a week person.

I overcome this problem by picking a venue that was getting low numbers the previous season and i would be able to play there every week. The smaller venues don't attract the really aggressive players and my grinding style of play usually gets me into the points every week. This tactic has me clear in third position and i'll take the last week off (wife actually due on the following day and banned me from playing).

I agree that it's more prestigous to have an average in the 60's and win at big venues, but if your goal is to get into the State Finals, think outside the square and find the smaller venues.
It worked for me!!

An added bonus of the small venues, is that they usually always play the first 3-6 weeks of a new season with numbers slightly up (around 25-35). This is when to play you "A" game and make some good points with the better number of players. People who played poorly during the first weeks but were playing at other venues will swap to the venues where they scored better. This drops the numbers to the low 20's and decreases the available points. (this is fine if you made good points early on, as it's harder for people to catch you.

The second bonus is that as numbers decline and the venues start losing money, they may drop out of the npl completely. If you made the points early and were in the top 5, you automatically qualify for the state finals. I did this at The Cathedral last season.

If you want to play the State Finals and can't afford the time or money to play every night of the week (i've put on enough weight playing pub poker thanks!!) then look for the smaller venues.

yeah fair enough pete.

but as garth said, its bloody hard to accomodate everyone all the time.

shift work would be hard though - i suppose they would have to try and pick a time when they are not working.

but if you are working morning/arvo/night shift work that also includes rotating weekends, then you are pretty much stuffed, and i think its asking a bit much of the NPL to try and accomodate this into calculations for the finals etc.

Interestingly, Season 1 2007 wouldn't have had this issue and had they played well enough they'd be in. The only difference is there was no rewards system in place for the bazillion games per week players and clearly those guys do deserve something extra to aim for.

Fitzy

well expressed post.--

You have expressed the routine I have adopted after my first season in NPL.
As a poker tragic playing in the Country[Barossa Gawler Region] I have with moderate success gained entry into all State Finals.

I read with considerable interest the debate/opinions expressed by the participants on this forum re the State leader boards , top 50 players , their averages, prize monies formats of tourneys etc, etc.... those players in the City/CBD/Metro venues have easier access to more venues/games than country bound players and the fact the State leader Board top 50 represents a 7% of NPL , I think the current routines used by the NPL are very satisfactory .

As continued adjustments and improvements are adopted , the changes to me are positive and developmental and as Garth has frequently presented are helping grow in all aspects , [venues/ players/npl staff] this league as the envy of the country. Regional leader Boards and associated prize monies have certainly created competitive and better poker routines and players and I for one and think I would speak for the Mr. Joe Average player of the NPL [ 93 % of the players] , look forward to the future initiatives and Season 2 , 2008 and beyond.

cheers !.
