I am currently hearing rumours about pub poker or NPL introducing cash buy-in tournaments in the near future. When is this happening? Whats the legality involved in this? Cheers..:-)

My understanding is that this is pretty illegal in SA at the moment (hence the 'no cash on the tables' rule), but maybe the rules are about to change.

Would be very interesting if they did.

In a word YES!!

Management are in the process of making sure everything is above board to protect venues, players and staff. They are consulting with lawyers and the Police and we should have an announcement very soon.

Stay tuned!

Intriguing. Sounds like a good way to keep players involved.

We will not discuss any matters of this nature on the forum at this time.

I do not mean to be rude, and most will attest that my post's are informative and I generally don't hide anything.

We have some major works in the pipeline and as Todd has stated we have sent a proposal to licensing, police and our solicitors.

In the recent APA case, Police vs. Jones and Ravesi, the magistrate ruled that poker is a game of skill and not luck.

This has opened the door to allowing cash buy in events to be POSSIBLY played in public and licensed areas. There are still a few grey areas that we wish to cover off, we do not wish to place our clients, staff or players in a situation where they could possibly face criminal action.

Hence why we are awaiting an answer from all the parties involved for our submitted proposal.

Several other providers have already commence or will be starting cash buy in events very shortly, my recommendation to all players is not to attend these events as we have good word that prosecution may still apply to the suppliers of these games as well as the players.

Good to know, thanks Garth! As always good to hear that NPL are handling this professionally and looking after everyone involved (including the players) and aren't concerned with just making a quick buck.

i am in two minds about this

i was initially for this, as i reckon it will be good and increase the standard of poker played, but now i am in 2 minds.

i thought about the troubles some TDs have with pissed guys already - can you imagine the trouble that would occur if there was now potentially hundreds of dollars on the line as well?

i think it would be good, but definitely not all tournaments - need to keep the free ones for the players that are only there for fun
