Garth,
With 3 players left, the person who has the dealer button is knock out -
Who becomes the Dealer?
I ask this because I have had two TD tell different things.
1) the dealer button moved to the player that was small blind and that the old big blind is again big blind
or
2) The dealer button goes to the player that was big blind as they can't be big blind two hand in a row.
I know that the dealer button becomes dead if this happens during normal play so that the blind stay in the right order.

Re: Dealer button heads up
I'm pretty sure #2 is correct. The previous BB would become the next SB.
I'm not perfect. I'm what perfect aspires to become

Re: Dealer button heads up
Could be completely wrong here...
When headsup the dealer is the SB and then also acts first because they have to at least make up the BB to play. Cards are dealt to BB first.
So if you were just dealer (or closest to being the dealer next?) the button would go to you and the other player gets to be BB and like it.
Could've actually just checked first but this was quicker

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Re: Dealer button heads up
Basic ruling is: Natural progression is followed (Previous SB becomes dealer) UNLESS the same player would be BB 2 hands in a row. Then the button would be switched.
You can be SB 2 hands in a row in this situation, that's allowed.

i figure that the BB moves along, because this is the only position that cannot be dead. then the rest works itself out

In head's up, there are no dead positions at all.

of course there aren't. but what i am trying to say, is that the big blind follows its natural progression, and then the small blind and the dealer is the other player. is this right?

Re: Dealer button heads up
I hesitate to get into this one, but I was told, by more than just one td. that the first hand in heads up may differ from the usual play of heads up. for example, the big blind must always be paid, but in the first hand of heads up, there may not necessarily be a small blind, then the natural progression follows on from the second hand.
when I had it explained to me I understand it and it sounds fair ... and we follow that rule in our home games, whether it is right or not remains to be seen, I have been bitten on the butt by rules before. and a lot of td's have told me they don't know or that my understanding is wrong. but when I got it from one of the most experienced td's in npl, one would presume it is right.
I suppose it is not as important in a home game, but it would be nice if all the td's could play by the same rules. good luck with this one, let me know if you solve it .... queen 9

Re: Dealer button heads up
THIS IS HOW IT GOES !!!!!!
1/ small blind is always dealer
2/ big blind can never be big blind twice ( from 3 players to 2 players )
Continue as the way it runs if small blind last hand then they will be big blind next hand but big blind willl never post twice
3/small blind acts first PRE flop and big blind act first AFTER the flop
4/Big blind always recieve first card in the deal
if you can follow these you will never go wrong

Spot on mate.

There is always a small blind. No dead positions in heads up. The dealer button is always on the player who is not BB. That player is also SB. Once you figure out who is BB, the other player gets the button & SB.
