Finally decided on a retailer for gas and electricity. After much research, I realised that standard government enforced gas/electricity supply/usage rates apply to all retailers, and I'm pretty sure retailers can't offer different rates to this, they just quote different periods to make it harder to compare retailers!

So the only different between retailers is the terms and conditions, and the discount they offer based on whether you have gas and electricity, or pay bills early etc.

Ended up going with TRU energy (www.truenergy.com.au), they offered:
-4% off gas and electricity charges, and
-a further 3% discount when bills are paid by the due date.
-No contract (but $90 exit fee if I leave within 1st year, $70 within 2nd year, $50 within 3rd year, $0 after that)

They also waived the "service connection fee" and ensured my gas metre would be installed tomorrow.

I was considering Simply Energy's online direct debit account, but didn't have time to look into the terms and conditions which made it the cheapest offer (according to the ESCOSA Estimator).

I hope this helps some of you out there!

So... that's basically a contract then, with exit fees!

Well yeah, I guess you're right, what I said doesn't make much sense! I guess technically all energy arrangements are some types of contract, but I guess with this one I can get out of it if I want to.

Think with Tru, its not really a contract, if you relocate you don't have to pay the disconnect fee.

I got mine shut off in April, but have gotten rid of the bill.
