Antivirus is a fine art. So many different aspects to it that make it a good, or not so good, product.
Some poorer ones don't have active scanning, and won't detect a file as you get it. solly really. Others detect changes to different parts of the system (ie ___.exe is trying to change your registry" etc)
A package that performs as a virus scanner and a firewall isn't a bad thing, and isn't always "two unrelated things" stuck together.
How the software performs when you have an infected file, or something else, is important too. Deletion, quarantining etc is important, and important to do properly.
AVG isn't bad. Not my favourite free one - that would be AVAST.
But for me, I'm not paying for the sofware itself, I'm paying for the support and updates. Free AV software isn't bad, it's the updates that concern me.. regardless of how much they force it down my throat. I trust someone I'm paying to provide me up to the minute updates, than someone who doesn't have to do anything at all.
