You're a Bunch of Factors

Hi there Guys & Gals, I thought it might be a good idea if we had our own "VIRUS ALERT SITE" on NPLSA.

I'm not as smart as most of you so I really depend on others to varify or just take a stab at Google or Snopes.

I received an Email from Sandra Ison saying there was a virus called "POSTCARD" and not to open it as it will destroy my hard drive. S-hit I don't enen know what a friggin hard drive is, LOL.

I drove to Sydney in 12 hours and that was a hard drive but I know it has bugger all to do with the computer, LOL

I emailed it to all my friends like a good guy and a M8 from the Restorers Club said to read all the way to the bottom of the SNOPES report because the one I sent was a friggin HOAX!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man this is so bloody time consuming and scary for an old fart like me.

SO HERE'S THE CHALLENGE

Can we leave this post here so all the smarty pants people can help us not so smarty pants people in understanding what's real and what's not???????????????????????????????

There's an easy approach to all of that Bob...

If it says to 'click here', then don't.
If it says to forward it on to your friends, then don't.
If it says something about a virus and it's not a personal message (ie it looks like it's a forward or a copy/paste) from someone you know, then it's bollocks.

Basically, if it wants you to do anything at all, just don't do it and it's very likely you'll be fine.

Get yourself a decent internet security software package (legally).

I recommend Kaspersky (link for you here).

So wait a minute.

You want us to post the details of every spam email we come across? Come off it.

I'm already busy enough on Pokertube.

Whilst he could very well have spent some time researching things on the internet it's only fair to cut people that didn't grow up with PC's some slack.

Bob..... Google and Wikipedia could perhaps be regarded as the modern day versions of WD-40 and duct tape (super fricken useful).

If you need to know what something is or just learn a bit more about it, those are great places to start. You can look stuff up for yourself without asking everyone else to just tell you (I mean that very politely).

I realise there are people such as yourself who could help other like myself at times. And sometimes one may need the use of duct tape as an alternative to sarcasm (I also mean that very politely).

No AK I was trying to say if there were a genuine virus on the internet we, us, you, me, anyone, could actually warn fellow posters on this site, post, thread or whatever the "F" you call it.

What is wrong with people of todays society. Nobody opens doors for women any more or offer their seat to the elderly or pregnant women and if you ask a question you end up with negatives.

Ok Bob, will help you out on this one. And give a very valid response.

If you are using Outlook express, or Outlook, or any hard drive based email client i.e something that you just click and it downloads your emails. There are two things you can do.

Number one, Create an email aaaa@aaa.com and put that in your address book.

Simple rule of this is, that if you have a virus on your computer that is sending out emails, you will get bounce backs from this address. When or if that happens, run your virus checker or send it on to the nearest computer store and ask them to fix it.

Number two, don't open any attachments from people you don't know. So simple yet so often misintepreted.

As for all the email you get from friends about such and such a virus, scam or person who has done something that can delete your harddrive. Just type in the main part of the email into google and 9 times out of 10 you might find it in snopes or use the "site:" command for google.

I.E Postcard virus site:www.snopes.com
Which should bring up hopefully the right result.

As for current viruses around the Internet. Best site is usually Trendmicro think they have a stats page, and you can narrow it down to a country.


Got to remember good computer viruses are much like human viruses. They want to get the most out of a cell before the cell literally burst apart releasing more viruses. So in a computer, deleting the hard drive, doesn't serve the replication process too well.

Thank you so much for your genuine concerns and sincere reply to my queerie Brett. You my friend no matter what people may say are a true gentleman and I and many other non savvy users really appreciate your help on the forum.

Unfortunately some of the young and not so young scribes on here have misunderstood my request or reasoning behind my post. I used to use "Hoaxbuster" which was so, user friendly but the US Govt. had stopped financing them recently so I was at a loss. I do have AVG and SPYBOT and I upgrade regularly.

I thought the forum would be an ideal place to ask as there appeared to be some computer smart people on here. Unfortunately it's like when I ask my son the following question.

How do I download songs onto my computer? He goes here, then there, and somewhere else and says there you go that's where I do mine, and that was it!!! Well it's there somewhere and when I asked how or what do I do from there I get attitude so I say don't bother.

Isn't it funny how as a parent we needed to be more patient and understanding. We had to show our kids simple things like tieing their shoe laces over and over again. Or how to read, use a spoon and later a knife and fork or how to turn on a computer game and play it with them until they could do it themselves.

And now that they are 23 and 28 we are still showing them how to do simple every day tasks. And if we show the same attitude they crack the s-hits and you end up doing the task anyway, coz they tell their mum I didn't show them properly LOL.

Unfortunately in todays society it's all go and no slow and I still haven't downloaded a bloody song LOL. My mobile has something called Blue tooth LOL what's a friggin blue footh doin in my phone anyway?

So, I asked someone and they said blah, blah, blah, there you go it's on and I sent you a video from my phone!!!!!!!! Really I said. He says yeah have a look so he guides me through and says click on view video and OMG can you really do that with a horse?????????
