Calling all computer nerds

I need to find out the cheapest way to get Internet set up on this new computer I'm getting from Dave. I don't want a plan, I just want a way to connect to the internet.

What I've got: A wireless router that I used to use for my laptop, and the Wii. Could I just get a wireless card and stick that in the PC? (as I've been told). If so, what sort is the best? The PC I'm on now is connected to the net by way of the router, through the phone line though.

Wireless network card. Depending on the router go for something B.G compliant.

Belkin is usually pretty decent as far as i have found. I have avoided D Link, because i just don't like them.

As far as setting up.

XP
Most cards go as Plug n Play, Then you just have to detect the network. Check your router settings.

Vista.
Still Learning it ..... but same kind of thing in regards to plug and play. And use the connect to to find the wireless network.

As for sharing between the two computers. XP to Xp is easyish, Vista to Vista is easyish, if someone knows how to share between XP and Vista wirelessly let me know, Because i don't have the time to find out.

www.staticice.net.au to find cheap prices as well.

netgear are also pretty decent.

all you need is a wireless network card for your PC.

these days you can get a USB one, so you dont even have to worry about putting in a PCI card.

anywhere from 20 to 50 bucks for a wireless card is pretty decent

its pretty easy brett

all you have to do is make sure both accounts have a password on them that you need to log in. vista makes you have this when you want to network. other than that, its pretty much the same deal

I have no idea of the nitty gritty details ak, as i am no interent guru.

But if you have a wireless modem at your phone line (which is what i think you said you have)

then yes just stick a usb wireless reciever in the back of your computer and conect the 2, and your away.

I recently did my new computer this way (i used a netgear reciever), as i didnt have a phone line in the room i wanted to use the computer in, this way i can use 1 or more compters in any room of the house and even my shed without phone lines.

i was told that once my wireless modem was set up then i could run several recievers to severall computers off the one modem and therefore of the one plan.

My plan is once my kids get old enough they will get a cheap computer for a start, and so where i had 1 computer running of the 1 plan i will have 2 or 3, i will just then have to expand the size of my plan to accomodate the extra downloads.

if you dont have a wireless modem then get one ($200 approx), and the recievers were approx $40,

they might be riverland prices, but you can get a wireless modem/router for a bit over 100 bucks these days.

If you have a PC, first option should be wired. IF your PC is next to or close to the wireless router - and the router has some ports in it (sometimes 4) then get a network cable and plug it in. It is more reliable, and secure, than a wireless connection. Important for things like playing poker online - less chance of dropping out! If you aren't close enough, then a wireless adapter would be the next best, and as people have suggested you can get a USB one easily enough.

i agree with this

my pc is in the study at the back of the house, and the only phone port i can use is in the man bedroom up the front of the house.

this means that the wireless drops out occasionally - VERY annoying if you are sitting on rockets.

security is good enough as long as you use your security settings properly
