sorry wrong monitors


just thought i would ask what people are rocking in the say of setup at home.
currently i have a samsung 24" alongside an older 22", which is awesome because the 24" just about fits everything i want on there, and then i can use the the other screen for msn, music, watching tv/poker shows etc.

poker wise, i usually put 6 tables on the 24" screen, and if i am playing any more than that they go on the second screen. in hindsight, i would have gone the 1900/1200 resolution instead of the slightly smaller fullHD, (my second monitor is only 1680/1050) - if i did this, i reckon i could fit the tables much better, but meh.


if i win the lottery (or even a decent sized poker tourney) then i am pretty sure i am going to get me one of these from samsung

does anyone know where they can get a cheap 30" monitor from? if i can get one for a decent price, i have decided my poker oll can take the hit. doing a bit of a search at msy, getright, dell etc, and the only ones i have seen are from dell, and they are $1600-1800.

compare this with with one that msy has at the moment, a 27" for $339.

so if i could get a 30" for under about $700 then i might have a look at it.

any ideas? are they even close to that price at all? (asus and samsung dont even seem to go to 30")

just did a bit more of a google, and it seems that samsung did sell one at one stage, but its not on their website anymore. interesting.

I'm going to ask what will probably go down as a stupid question but I guess I can live with it as I have a limitted IQ when it comes to electronics and internet stuff.

So, my qustion to you Mr benny the cunt is as follows; why can't you/me/we use a LED LCD Full def. tv type screen as a monitor??

I do ... have a 32" Acer LCD TV use it as a monitor... bit grainy but works

I was looking at oo.com.au and the prices on their LED flat screens are exceptionally low. I assume the "full HD" has a better picture than the standard HD but would it be as good as a computer monitor?? I have no idea.

No Bob it will be a lower resolution picture . Even if you have a High res... PC . But it would be better than what a standard Def TV.

there are a few differences, but the main difference is the resolution between a TV and a computer screen.

the best (in fact most) TVs these days come out at FULL HD resolution. this means that there are 1920X1080 pixels on the screen. this is what the blueray movies come out at. (there are lots of intricacies such as progressive vs interlaced which dont matter for this discussion)

so basically, you can go as big as you like in screen size, but you will only ever get 1920X1080 little dots on the screen and no more. the bigger you go, the bigger each individual pixel gets - so the text etc will be physically bigger on the screen, but you will not be able to fit any more information on the screen.

at present, i have a 24" full hd computer monitor (and a 22" alongside) so in reality, if i wanted to hook a 50 inch full hd plasma up to my computer, i could, and i would have a bigger overall screen than the current dual screens that i have now, but it would only show the same information as my main screen. so it would be physically bigger but with less resolution.

so in reality, unless i wanted to sit on my couch and play poker, there is no advantage for me wanting to do this.



on the other hand, very large computer monitors actually have a higher resolution - the 30 inch dell one has a 2500x1600 resolution, which is quite a bit larger than full hd. this means that you can fix more information on the screen at once. the downside is that everything on the screen is smaller, but thats ok. with reference to poker, this means that i could be able to fit, say, 12 tables comfortably on a screen. at present, with my full hd monitor, i can easily fit 6, but 12 is a little too small.


there are other issues as well, such as refresh rate, which also affect the viewing quality.

Thanks for the above info benny the cunt and also writing it so even I can understand the differences. I was looking at getting a 32" unit with LED LCD FHD that will fit in our current entertainment unit.

I'm holding off on buying a low line unit for the lounge area that we both like. Then I'll get a bigger screen with the same or maybe better output. I can then mount the 32" on the wall as my computer screen or as a tv in my computer room.
