Simple Maths.
For a flush you need to have 5 cards out of 13. Resulting in 1287 different possibilities per suit for a total of 5148 total flushes. Less 40 for the straight flushes. Gives a total of 5108 Different kinds of flushes available.
For a straight you need 5 consecutive cards in a row. And there are only 10 possible Straights.
A,2,3,4,5 2,3,4,5,6
3,4,5,6,7 4,5,6,7,8
5,6,7,8,9 6,7,8,9,10
7,8,9,10,j 8,9,10,j,q
9,10,j,q,k 10,j,q,k,a
Using the combinations. we have 4 aces, 4 2's, 4 3's, 4 4's, 4 5's.
Therefore (4 combinations of 1) to the power of 5. less the 4 straight flushes. Gives us 1020 combinations per straight.
Gives us a total of 10200 possible straight combinations.
Why a straight doesn't beat a flush.
These calculations are based off 5 card hands. 7 card hands makes the odds bigger i believe.
