Crusaders Touch Football - Poker Night Fundraiser

Postby mr_niceguy_1979 » Mon Jan 28, 2008 5:04 pm

Hi everyone,
I am looking at ways to raise money for touch football players in South Australia that have been selected to represent the "Crusaders" permit playing in the National Touch League (NTL) at Coffs Harbour in March 2008. The Crusaders permit is made up of players from VIC, TAS and SA and the Crusaders are sending 3 teams to compete at the NTLs. Attending the NTLs can be very expensive considering players pay for everything themselves, including uniforms, flights and accommodation. This is on top of other fees paid at park, state league, and state levels.

One of our fundraising ideas was to have a freeroll poker tournament and raising money around this idea (raffles, chocolates, food, drinks etc). We are looking at charging $10 for entry which would include dinner (BBQ) and entry into the tournament. At this stage we are trying to find a centrally located venue for Saturday 16th February, at little or no cost (community hall or sporting club?). We are hoping to finalise the venue by the end of the week so that we can start organising other details and advertising the event.

We are also looking for donations from the community so we can offer prizes throughout the night. It promises to be a really good night and any support you can offer wold be greatly appreciated.

Any businesses and individuals involved with the event will be properly acknowledged and your company would be exposed to a wide range of people within the touch community and you would be assisting the elite athletes of South Australia raise money.

Once details are finalised, an invitation will be extended to everyone.

I look forward to hearing from you

Regards
Brice Mitchell

Hey Brice,

Great idea, but I'd look into the idea of a "freeroll" yet still having some sort of entry fee. I don't know the exact wording of the law but if I recall correctly you aren't allowed to charge anything.

I might be wrong completely however, maybe check with Garth or Brett for more info.

Hey Des,
Yeah, we have to be careful with our wording and how we run the event. I think the correct wording should be it's a "Poker Night" rather a "freeroll tournament", and people are paying for entry into the venue/night and for the BBQ, not for the tournament. The actual tournament is free and the entry fee covers the BBQ and "entertainment". I think it's okay cause we're not "playing for money" as there will be no cash prizes.

Spoke to Brock and Garth and they seem happy that this arrangement would not be illegal but I still need to discuss finer details of the event so we don't get into trouble!

Cheers
Brice

What's the latest on this Brice?

Sounds like a good idea and I'd certainly be keen to attend.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Gday Pete,
We've finalised the details for the event but are still looking for a few sponsors to enhance the prizes. If you know anyone that would like to raise the profile of their company to a new diverse area of the community, let me know. We would really like to promote a local/Australian poker merchandise manufacturer/distributor but would be happy to promote any companies that can offer us more prizes!

Cheers

More on this, if anyone has any "keyrings" or other prizes/trophies they no longer want, we would gladly except these and award them as prizes on the night. I'm sure a lot of you have accumulated a number of keyrings and don't have nearly as many keys! If you're interested, please contact me.

Cheers
Brice

Love to but the ones that I have are sitting quite happily in a jar. Even though they don't get used, I like them :)
Will dance for your chips!
