Is there such a thing as a rewriteable DVD?
I know of CD-RW, but is there DVD-RW?
I like to back up stuff from my DVD hard drive, but don't want to continuously buy new DVD-R's.

Yes there is! Quite Common.

pretty pricey though, about 4 times the price of a normal DVD.
if you are not backing up that much, (i.e important files that are only a hundred meg or so total), then you could use a normal DVD and just create a multisession disk so that you can write to it, and then later write some more.
otherwise, if you are going to be backing up a whole lot of data, then external HDD would be more cost effective than DVDs
but if you are wanting to just get stuff off so u can format and put all back on again then rewritable dvds are prolly the way to go

Try a USB flash drive (memory stick), particularly if you don't wanna spend a lot on a DVD+/-RW.
