cliffs: me gushing about birds of tokyo

I am a big birds of tokyo fan, anyone else here?

I was so excited when their new cd came out, i actually bought it over itunes - couldn't wait to go down to the shop.

First thing i will say is that it is AWESOME.

All of the songs are incredibly catchy - more of a move towards the mainstream than their last efforts (and very removed from Ian Kenny's other band, Karnivool, who are also awesome by the way), but that does't detract from it at all, and will no doubt increase their appeal.

I believe that they will become the next powderfinger on the australian music scene.

Ian Kenny has an extremely powerful voice, definitely in the upper echelons with bernard fanning as the best rock voice in australia, if not the world.

All of the first five songs on the album have the potential to become singles - particular highlights for me are the first song on the cd, "plans", and "circles" as well as their first single, "the saddest thing i know". "the unspeakable scene" is also a great song

the rest of the cd is so great though, my hairs were pricking up on the back of my neck when i listened to it.

I would rate this as a 10/10 album, and i reckon i have heard only about 4 others that i would put in that category.

do yourself a favour and support these guys and buy the album - very easy to just download it for free, but these guys really deserve some cash for this effort, so go and buy it.

Love 'em too, and the new album is great.

They were on Triple J on Thursday (or Friday) talking about the new album etc, really funny interview :)

Not the biggest fan of Plans.

I do really like The Saddest Thing I Know, though.
I can't pick what it reminds me of, a mix of a couple of songs.

As much as benny the cunt will hate it, in the start of the song I can hear Muse, slightly.

have you listened their "broken strings tour" cd scott?

you can definitely hear that influence on this record - the strings and piano on a lot of the tracks really gives them a lot more atmosphere.

i love plans, but i have to agree, there is definitely a bit of a muse influence in there. i think it is the strings in the background.

It's the stataco tempo and vocal melody that remind me of Muse.

+ some other songs that I can't place.

I think Plans is not the best song to put second there, it sounds so mundane and standard compared to the first.

also, i dont actually mind muse that much, i just dont like his voice sometimes, sounds like he is about to cry

some of the muse guitar riffs are pretty killer.
