High Roller - The Stu Unger Story (spoilers)

Mainly showing what happens to those that get too involved into a lifestyle.

hey guys, just watched the stu ungar story. i would have to say that this movie was passable at best - performance by Michael Imperioli as Stu Ungar was good, but the way that the movie was set up was pretty crappy. at the very start of the film, a mysterious guy comes into his room in the middle of the night, and says i am gonna kill you if you dont tell me a little story. and so he starts talking about his life story in flashbacks etc. surely they could have used a better framing device than that, it was horrible.

the rest of the movie was pretty good however, but there is very little poker actually being played. it is more about drugs/hookers and him losing all his cash on the horses. i am not going to tell anyone the ending, but it was also so so.

2/5 stars for me

As i said heard.

My view though is that the gambling lifestyle is not all good. There are a few people that get caught up in it and do get lost in it as well.

A lot of people get caught up in that initial excitement, but then it comes down to that next win. Borrowing from friends, and family. Doing stuff, that you would never have done before you were gambling. In the end, going down a dark path, that the old you would look at and say, "that was never supposed to happen".

Read the following articles by Tom Sexton about Chip Reese and Danny Robison. Very similar backgrounds, Very different paths taken whilst gambling. Two very different outlooks on life.

Might go and watch it now. Watched some of Stu Ungar clips from the 97 WSOP think it might be interesting

Doesn't sound too flash, benny the cunt. The whole "gambles life away" plotline has been done too many times - hell, even The Simpsons have done it. I am a big fan of Michael Imperioli however, but still... that framing device sounds awful, think I'll give this one a pass.

Regardless of if the "gambles life away" plot line has been done ... doesn't matter

That was his life!

very true. there was little emphasis on his poker, more on the gin he played as a little kid, the money he owed to lots of people because of his betting on horses and sports, and his drug abuse
