Re: Port Magpies
FWIW I don't think the SANFL made the wrong decision.
Being asked if a club that has lost money can merge their administration with another club that has lost money? They *have* to look after the interests of the SANFL.
They can't take the history of PAMFC into account.
And I'm not being cynical, that's just how it is, regardless of the club involved.
My (original) club West Torrens would have folded had they not merged (clubs, not just administrations) with Woodville. If they hadn't, they would have perished. No one would have done a thing about it. As much as I didn't want them to merge, I was only 12, turning 13 at the time - so I've had almost 20 years with the "new club". The unique position we were in, was that Woodville was a newer club ('64) and really REALLY shouldn't have even come into the league considering the location of them. Neither club would've survived long term. This is part of the reason why Central District have done so well. They came in to the SANFL in the same year, but by virtue of the fact they were in a large, uncovered area, nowhere near another club, gave them such potential for growth.
In the SANFL you either survive, collapse, or merge with another club.
I hope Port Adelaide survive, I really do. It wouldn't be the same without them.
Part of the reason (I beleive) this has happened is because of the name and colours. If the Magpies were able to enter the AFL with the Magpies emblem, and colours, the transition *from* the SANFL would have been much clearer. Chances are they wouldn't have stayed in the SANFL - because the club, in it's entirety, would still exist.
Now we're left with a "new" club called the Power, using the tradition of an old club, in the Magpies.

No. South Melbourne relocated. The club moved. One club became one, just somewhere else.
And no, Brisbane and Footscray merged. Two clubs became one.
Port made a NEW team. Nothing like it at all.
