Season 5; First NPL Champs weekend results.

The weekend of the 17th and 18th of January saw the Dingley International host NPL’s first weekend of finals poker; over the weekend a total of four tournaments were held which saw over $28,000 in cash and prize won by NPL players.

$1,000 Last Chance/Warm up Satellite.

The weekend kicked off with a $1,000 Last chance satellite; this event was open to all NPL players and if any player made the final table and had not already qualified for the $25K Main Event they would receive entry into the big one.

123 players registered for this event and were looking forward to the warm up; this tournament boasted a 3,000 start stack and twenty minute blind levels in a very relaxed structure. This saw over 6 hours of poker played with the final table finishing up at around 6.30pm.

The final eight were to be paid out and our bubble was Glenn Allan. Results are as followed:

8th Simon Kerkham
7th Craig Orr
6th Jim Baker
5th Karen Ng Qualified for ME
4th Jo White
3rd Brad Walsh
2nd Jan Georgiou
1st Jamie Farley.

Congratulation to Jamie who took out the number one spot; Jamie was the chip leader for most of the later stages of the tournament and was our super stack on the final table, wielding his chip stack with true aggression and displaying some finely tuned poker skills to pick up pots, pick his spots and eliminating players in a great display of poker on the final table.

$1,500 Regional Teams Event.

The Teams event saw 68 players arrive to represent their region in a teams event to discover which region produces the strongest team.

The format of the event was something different and never experienced by NPL players before; points were accumulated for finishing in 1st,2nd or 3rd positions on each eight handed sit’n’go, two rounds of sit’n’go tables were conducted and after those two round points were tallied and the top ten point scorers and top point scorer from each region would contest for the big Bonus points in two SNG’s.

With no team reps from Bendigo or North Vic and only one player from Sunraysia it was going to prove difficult for these three regions to lift off the bottom of the leaderboard.

After round 1 the results were as follows:

Gippsland 21
Geelong 17
Metro South 14
Metro East 12
Metro West 6
Metro North 5
Ballarat 4
South West Vic 2
Sunraysia 0

Round two saw some substantial moves by Metro South and a few other regions and some big point hauls to dramatically change the leaderboard, after round two we saw the following results:

Metro South 33
Gippsland 32
Metro East 25
Geelong 22
Metro West 18
Ballarat 12
South West Vic 10
Metro North 10
Sunraysia 0

The bonus rounds were where the real points were to be found with over 110 points available on each ten handed table.

After this round was completed the final leaderboard looked like this:

Metro South 66
Metro West 53
Gippsland 43
Ballarat 42
Metro East 40
Metro North 28
Geelong 26
Sunraysia 18
South West Vic 17

Congratulations to Metro South on taking out this event and being the inaugural winners of the regional teams event shield. The Metro South team should be complimented on their skill and displayed some real strength as three of their players were also Top 10 of the State Leaderboard.

Metro West displayed some dominance in the bonus round and Joan Dobie once again proved that her composure and poker skills on the felt are worth their weight in gold; in setting up her overall individual second place finish with 21 points. These vital points secured Metro West’s runner up status.

Alan Jones, team captain of the four man Ballarat Team, was our overall individual points winner on 23 points, well done Alan.

$25,000 Main Event.

416 players arrived early Sunday Morning to play for over $25,000 in cash and prizes. Their hard work and determination over the ten week period would result in them sitting down to a tournament structure of 5,000 start stacks and thirty minute blind levels. It would prove to a be a long day for all involved with over 10 hours of poker played to decide the Season 5 Champ.

At around 8pm the money bubble finally burst with Ursula Brain, Croydon Hotel, being the unfortunate player to go out in 31st place.

At 10pm our final table was formed :

Name Venue Seat Chip Count
Jason "Shakey Wyld Sale Greyhound Tabaret 4 446,000
Rebekah Pickard Norlane Hotel 5 319,000
Lyn Ockenden Dorset Gardens Hotel 1 265,000
Ross "Protégé" Dorman Caulfield Tabaret 6 256,000
Paul Durkin Commercial Hotel (Yarram) 9 230,000
Angelo Napoletano Edwards Place Coffee Lounge 8 194,000
Marcus Lewis Royal Standard Hotel (Toora) 3 123,000
Maree Wilson Richmond Henty Hotel 2 193,000

It didn’t take long for our fist player to be eliminated when Maree raised to 60,000 with her pocket tens and then called the all in of Rebekah’s. Unfortunately Maree had just ran her pocket ten’s into the dreaded AA of Rebekah. The board bricked out for Maree and in the first hand we saw an elimination.

With some intense back and forth action and some very reluctant calls we were soon witness to some of the most dramatic heads up action between Ang and Rebekah that would commence with both players all in on the first hand. Rebekah and Ang would find themselves racing with Rebekah’s AdQh slightly behind that of Ang’s 8d,8h.

Unfortunately the flop would fall Rebekah’s way with Td, Qs, Kc. The Kd of the turn did not improve the odds for Ang and it looked like it was going to be an early night until the river produced the miracle 8c to give Ang a set and a huge chip lead.

The heads up played out for a further hour with the chip lead changing several times. Eventually Ang moved all in from the button with Q high and Rebekah was heard to say excellent as she called and once again tabled AA. The board once again held up for Rebekah and we were able to crown our second female champion who dedicated her $10,000 winnings to her children.

Well done to all of final table players and congratulations to all of our qualifiers for creating such a wonderful work environment and being polite to each other and following venue and NPL staff’s directions throughout the day.

Well done to the team of TD’s who once again worked tirelessly to administer and provide this great day; Adam Hancock, Michael Ratnik, Ron Desira, Travis Adams, Matt Barry and Ivan Brandisch.

I wish to heartily thank David Collins for his support and hard work once again as well as Paul bell Inskip who put in over 30 hours of work over the weekend.

Thanks to all of the qualifiers and let’s all look forward to a huge 2009/
