Dealing with a cooler run

Postby Torak » Wed Feb 01, 2012 9:32 pm

Hey guys, just got back into playing online and straight off the bat im hit with a cooler run.

Over 800 hands
Playing 2c 5c, 6 max on pokerstars. Playing well in my opinion 18% VPIP and 11% PFR.
All in EV states i should be up about $18, but im down $15.
Non showdown winnings is -54c

How do you guys deal with cooler runs?
I myself when realise i am on one close the tables down and play a tournament or vice versa if playing tournaments. Once a little play on these i shutdown and leave it for a day to let it all reset and hopefully comeback the next day with a fresher mindset.

Would love to hear others thoughts, aswell as how you deal with it during a tournament and in a live environment.

Reading your post think you are doing everything right and you could probably teach me how to deal with cooler swings better than I currently do. When I am going through downswings I try to play through it. I have to be careful not to tilt so I take breaks more often and take the time off to review hands and see if I could have done anything differently. If I find that I just got unlucky then meh what can you do. If it is that I played it badly I try to learn for next time and move on. Bank roll management has really helped me avoid tilt and to cope with downswings much better. Would love to hear how others deal with downswings as well.

Load up 4 tables of PLO and disregard all bankroll management
Riskers gamble, experts calculate.

Have you thought about moving up in stakes where players will respect your raises.

Do you buy in for 100BB's ($5)
if you do than you are approximately $33 below EV which is 6.5 Buyins and you have only lost 3 buyins. I think you can be happy with yourself and not worry about it at all. I grind cash games full time and 3 buyins isnt even a downswing and is nothing to worry about. The main thing you have to do is try and play each hand optimally and if you feel like you are not tilting keep playing and by the sounds of it the money will come eventually.
In the short term there is a lot of luck involved in poker but in the long term if u make the right decisions over a big enough sample luck gets cancelled out and you make money. Keep grinding in my opinion.

I buy in for 200BB($10)
I know its not a downswing, more of just a variance session. Ended u the night $5 down over 1000 hands so came back a bit.

Thanks for the post, very informative.

@ Russ, i currently dont have the bankroll for higher stakes.

Dont worry about it torak. Bad sessions suck but are innevitable it's important to not let it afect your mindset and thus future sessions though.

David can you cook and do you enjoy watching sports? these are prerequisites
