I agree Des.
All in all, most venues have it right. Sometimes there are issues but eh, with that many venues and that many players, there are bound to be issues.
I prefer places make it easy for the punter to know what they are getting. Usually this is stamps per drink/meal rather than cost.
Schooner/Soft Drink = one stamp
Pint/Spirit = two stamps
Meal = four stamps
Wine, I'm unsure of as the cost can change a lot, up and down.
Meals, I can understand if they are three stamps or four, depending on the cost. When venues look at profit, there is a lot more margin in drinks than in meals.
I am generally happy if I can get a drink and a meal for a whole card, then two more drinks (bourbon or beer) for the other card.
If a venue has points per $$ - there are always issues.
I remember at the Blue Gums, I wanted a light beer, in a pint. It was $4.50. But I needed $5 for two stamps so I asked if I could get a light and pay $5.
Seems silly to pay $18 for one card if you want light beer.

Re: ROULETTES TAVERN STAMP SYSTEM
Hi there Guys & Gals, me again.
Just for the record I'm more than happy with the current system at Roulettes. They have easy to read signage on all the bars and for me it is workable.
If I'm on time and able to have a meal and a couple of drinks with my mates and put fews golds in the poker machine I'm only using those 8 muscles.
I only put forward the suggestion of $3 per stamp to get a reaction and I wasn't disappointed.

Des wrote:The Pooraka is one venue however. I've played many tournaments and actually know many "owners/managers" of the venues.
The pricing the Pooraka offers is great... but not all (in fact not many) venues could run at a profit.
Keep in mind, the Pooraka is a football club and I'm sure they are extremely happy for the extra business on "off nights" from football training and match days. Football clubs are well known for their good prices as their staff levels and overheads are less than a pub/hotel.
I feel that the guideline of $3 per stamp is very fair, and the new system that Roulette's has put in place is in line with other venues.
Just spend your money where you see fit is the only advice I can offer as I'm 100% sure that other venues won't be able to match Pooraka's just due to the fact that they would lose money.
Please Des what are you thinking
The Pooraka Club doesnt have the daily patronage some of the bigger venues have and rely wholey and soley on the community support and sponsorship just to stay afloat. People like Tony and Sharon etc who spend hours and hours of their own time and effort usually without pay just so we can have one of the best venues in SA but their overheads are still there
You state the Pooraka Club is extremily happy for the extra business on off nights
BUT
do you realise that that statement also applies to the Hotels etc where they have increased their patronage on nights that were dead
For example Roulettes on a Sunday Night has increased their meal sales by 300% bar sale by 400% and god know how much money is pushed through the pokies
Yet they still screw over the punters by playing the system to profit themselves yet they scream they are not making any money
BULLSHIT
But wait theres more.
How many of these venues would you visit on a weekly basis if the poker wasnt there ???????????????
I bet the answer is not many
Sure they have supposidy made the stamp system better and lowered some prices. So now you are paying less BUT you are falling a few cents short of the second or 3rd stamp. Eg $5.95 for one stamp. Now try offering the 5c to get the second stamp and watch them scream NO you will have to buy another drink etc.
This is not just happening at Roulettes but other venues are doing the same trick and its those venues that will eventually lose players
Thats why i praise Pooraka. Not just for the reduced prices but the stamp limit is around the $2.50 mark

No disrespect to DES, David but the statement JUST A FOOTBALL CLUB hit a nerve
The Community and Sporting Clubs are the support of the community
Just look and visit places like Pooraka, Para Hill CC, Parafield Gdn CC Salisbury Nth FC etc etc etc. These places dont fill their pockets with cash and run. They put the money back into the community supporting Kids and Adults wanting to have a catch and kick etc

Re: ROULETTES TAVERN STAMP SYSTEM
Hi Dave,
My background is in hospitality management. I am not siding with anyone here, but community clubs do get greater advantages than privately owned businesses; less tax as a whole, most staffing costs are either reimbursed by government or is voluntary work and also any clubs must return some of their profits back to the community.
After managing hotels for several years and then managing a workman's club for 1 year I can definitely say that clubs do have an advantage when it comes to overheads and re sale on items.
This is just my knowledge of how things operated in Vic and NSW. I do know that many clubs are exempt from some sales tax, whether ir be federal or State. Hence why most clubs can afford to sell items at a greater discount rate than the privately owned hotel up the road.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for community clubs, they are the cornerstone of many communities, all I am saying is that as a business model community clubs have a greater advantage in that they are not seeking large profit of there turnover whilst a privately owned establishment may be.
