My background is in hospitality management. I am not siding with anyone here, but community clubs do get greater advantages than privately owned businesses; less tax as a whole, most staffing costs are either reimbursed by government or is voluntary work and also any clubs must return some of their profits back to the community.
After managing hotels for several years and then managing a workman's club for 1 year I can definitely say that clubs do have an advantage when it comes to overheads and re sale on items.
This is just my knowledge of how things operated in Vic and NSW. I do know that many clubs are exempt from some sales tax, whether ir be federal or State. Hence why most clubs can afford to sell items at a greater discount rate than the privately owned hotel up the road.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for community clubs, they are the cornerstone of many communities, all I am saying is that as a business model community clubs have a greater advantage in that they are not seeking large profit of there turnover whilst a privately owned establishment may be.

Thats what I mean't to say, I guess I worded my post a little wrong, without much thought.

The community / sports clubs do have less overheads than the hotels, which make them able to offer cheaper meals / drinks.

It just seems to me a lot of people want a lot, but they want it for nothing. I'm going to avoid this thread now :)

I'd just like to firstly point out that I didn't start this conversation :D

Along the lines of where Goose is coming from..... If the venue is screwing you over, tell them all about it. Enough people doing this rather than just not going or not saying anything is more likely to get a favourable result.

Perhaps highest on the list of things that I am annoyed by (yep, it's a long list) is complaining about something but not being prepared to say/do anything about it. I'm not saying this for anybody to cause trouble, I'm saying this so players don't get trod all over as though it's ok.

BUT - most venues do seem to now be doing a decent job with the stamps. Have had the pleasure of seeing a few different places respond to the criticism and change for the better. Plenty were awesome right from the start.

For me, I find the following to be a decent 'standard':

schooner, soft drink = 1 stamp
pint, bottled/canned booze = 2 stamps (no idea about the goon).
meals under $10 are fine for 3 stamps (just get a softie or schooner to top up.. it's not as though you weren't having something to drink)
meals over $10 should be 4 stamps.

what should be outlawed is:

stamps per $ spent (pooraka can be forgiven cos they're soo cheap)
stamps per $ spent and diddling the cost to force you to buy more.
stamps per $ spent and combining everyones order into a single dollar amount and only dishing out say 4 stamps. I find THAT to be the height of rudeness.

Goose very rightly pointed out that the poker players very likely would not have been there to begin with, I obviously agree with this and I feel that as long as the venue understands this then everything will be swoit.

I'd also like to add... instead of just not playing that venue, perhaps tell them exactly why you're not coming back (politely) but play at a better alternative for the same night. Can't have you all not playing now can we?
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Hey Des!!!!!!!!!!! Are we twins that were seperated at birth???

I guess not as I think there would be an age difference but, we do have a lot in common. Mainly because we love the game, the competition, and the friends we have made.

Not all of us are able to finish in top spot but, for those who do congratulations. For the rest of us it's a night out with our families or just catching up with friends.

It's a way of meeting people with a common cause and to some this is their only outlet from being bored sitting at home in front of the telly.

Let the games begin and may your cards be monsters.
Remember, It takes 8 muscles to smile :D and 40 to frown :(

I'm out of breath after reading that!

I agree with Pete that discussing such issues in the correct manner with the venues is a good place to start. Surely it's better for all if a venue is aware of players' concerns, and can then review and hopefully act as they see fit.
