You're a Bunch of Factors

Hi all, first post for me.

I've been playing with the NPL for the last three seasons. Over the time I’ve been to several venues. I'll usually have a meal before playing and am often stamped up before the game starts. It’s a great way to relax after a hard days work.

I know others who also treat poker as a bit an escape of the daily hum drum, have a meal and a bit of a giggle with the cards. I’ve been to a few venues that put on a top notch show, but haven’t had the players to make hosting viable. Case in point was the Oakden. It was by far the best venue in my opinion, but was sadly closed down. I’ve assumed it was because of numbers.

For this reason I wanted to make and hear some comments about the various venues and the quality of the food/ service provided. I believe some places are putting on a fantastic show but aren’t being patronize

My list of venues in order:

1 Queens Arms: A+ eaten 7 times. Excellent Hotel, food service etc

2 Excelsior: A eaten 4x Excellent food, fresh, well made

3 Ark: B+ eaten 2x

4 Crows bar: B+ eaten 3x

5 Modbury plaza: C eaten 15x. good consistent food, but not great

6 Windsor: C eaten 20x. Inconsistent, Don’t order Oysters!!!

7 Glynde E eaten 3x crap food, but wont kill you!

8 TTG Hotel: F- eaten 5x. Every time food was off(literally)Kitchen should be closed down. Barmaids are damn fine though!

my comments are fair and justified.
Please support the good venues.

PS: Please dont point me out to the chef at the TTG Hotel

Studio 89 for food and service. Have we mentioned how awesome the pizzas are yet?

The new chef, Bill, cooks a damn fine steak as well.

Come down to Gawler! We've got some great pubs.

1/ Old Spot, Gawler - $16 schnitzel challenge - finish it all, and you get a beer, I think. Its meant to be "massive" - never seen the actual size of it, myself. Provided I have the money, I'll be trying this Monday. I haven't had a meal for a while, but they do make some excellent food. Average prices. Service is slow though - I ordered at 7pm, didn't get my meal till 8pm once.

2/ The Willaston, Gawler - best prices - $10 for a schnitzel, $13 for a parmigiana. Good food, too. Excellent service, and very fast - usually no longer than 15 minutes. This would be the venue I eat from the most.

3/ The Kingsford, Gawler. Easily the best, food wise. A little more expensive than the rest, though. Their parmigiana cannot be beat - so smothered with cheese and ham that you'll think you've died and gone to topping heaven. Friendly staff and good service.

Overall, all of Gawler's pubs are suitable for a meal. Each has their own advantages (Old Spot - bar chicks, Willaston - prices, Kinger - quality food), but you're definitely going to be happy with your meal, no matter where you go.

Swish is good for really yummy food, but if you want a huge meal don't order the grilled chicken breasts - i love it, because i'm not a big eater (although i will do my best to devour a really good, large chicken parmy, even if it does make me feel queasy!), but it is expensive. Fills both your cards though, and i'd spend the same amount on drinks anyway, this way i don't get drunk and make stupid poker decisions!

the service has been slow on occasion, but thats when 10 people order 25 minutes before they have to play poker, then wonder why it doesnt come out on time.

i have found that if you order at 645 instead of 7, it usually comes out within 15 minutes.

and the schnitzels are HUGE. i reckon they would be close to a kilo - they look bigger than those ones they had at the casino a while back. i am yet to finish one, and im not usually one for letting a free beer stay away from my belly

but yes, the willaston is by far the best value for food.

for 13 bucks, u get parmy (the outback or aussie or something ones are also good), but u also get free soup, salad, veg and dessert bar as well. so ur 13 bucks goes a long long way

dont forget the burger too

Ahh yes - the Swish burger is GOLD.

Fifteen bucks for your burger, chips and a pint.

Gotta give the thumbs up to;
Woodville Hotel - They do a stone grill. They heat a big hunk of stone up to 460degC and then give you a big hunk of steak. Add them together and a few minutes later... nom nom nom

What peeves me are venues that offer a meal and a pint... yet I don't drink beer, but they wont swap it for a spirit. I have to have a glass of coke as well.
