Unlucky Shoes
Sverre Sundbo woke up this morning wondering what to wear today. He called his girlfriend and she gave him a few suggestions. One of his choices was to wear a new pair of white sneakers.
Within the first level, he had seen his double-the-average stack reduced to less than 10,000. He called his girlfriend again and she told him to take off the sneakers as they might be bringing him bad luck. He duly did what he was told and, pot win after pot win, has seen his stack rise all the way up to 150,000.
Sverre can now be seen walking around the Amazon room in white socks which may now be dirty, but the smile on his face is clean and wide.

James McBeth One-Outered, Eliminated
Minni Ridakorpi got all her chips in the middle preflop vs. James McBeth, her 9h 9d trailing McBeth's As Ah. The flop was 10h 5h 3h, McBeth maintaining his lead and picking up the nut flush draw. The turn was the 5d, but the only card in the deck that could save Ridakorpi's tournament life, the 9c fell on the river, eliminating McBeth.
Ridakorpi was so distressed at the suckout that McBeth ended up consoling her with a hug at the end of the hand, assuring her that he could live with the beat.
Ridakorpi is up to 43,000.
(I think they either got the cards wrong or should go back and re-write this one, because Ridakorpi had the 9h, and the 5 on the turn opened her back up for 2 outs for the full house, so maybe the turn didn't pair the board and she had the 9s instead of the heart.)

Thank You India
Players at Orange #3 were recently discussing how "international" their table is. Players at the table include a Persian, an Irishman, a German, a Russian and a Canadian. During the discussion, one of the players made a huge preflop raise. In turn, each of the other players folded. After they did, the preflop raiser thanked each of them in turn.
"Thank you Russia. Thank you Spain. Thank you Ireland," the player said.
Bill Gazes, seated at a nearby table, turned and asked, "Who is he -- Alanis Morissette?"

McGowan Dodges Bullets
Joe McGowan, last seen ordering an arsenic cocktail following a hand in which he lost to a one-outer, has apparently kept his wits intact.
Just now McGowan was involved in another hand in which he raised to 3,000 preflop, was reraised to 13,000 and called. The flop came 5d 3h Jd. McGowan checked, and his opponent bet 25,000. McGowan thought a moment, then folded his pocket queens face up.
His opponent showed aces.
(McGowan's got his money all-in with a flopped set against an overpair (QQ) not long before this hand - and a player announcing they had folded one of the remaining queens. The turn? The case queen. When the coctail waitress walked by at the end of the hand, he asked for an arsenic cocktail

Pokernews got it wrong - he was crippled in a big pot but not knockd out. He's currently on 130k.

Re: WSOP News
Because they are still running a flight system for the 2nd day, and hence calculating that into the mix, we're guessing the average chip stack is around the 110k mark.

Lieu Lays Down a Set
An early-position player limped in, the button raised to 5,200, Liz Lieu called from the small blind, Ronnie Lawton called from the big blind, and the EP player folded. The flop was 10h 7s 2h. The action was checked to the button, who bet 13,000. Both Lieu and Lawton called. The turn was the 3h. Lieu checked, Lawton moved all in for 34,000, and the button called all in for 20,000.
"A set any good," wondered Lieu aloud as she pondered her decision.
"Dealer, do not pair the board!" Lieu implored as she mucked her cards.
The button turned up 7d 7h for middle set, while Lawton showed Kh Qh for a flush.
The river was the 8h and Lawton raked in the pot, eliminating the button. Lawton is up to 80,000 and Lieu's excellent fold left her with 50,000 to work with.
