Re: Poker Quiz

Postby AceLosesKing » Wed Jun 04, 2008 3:30 pm

I'm half finished with my answers. I'll finish the rest at another time, I'm going out soon. I'm putting in examples to most questions. There are a few that I plain don't know, however. I could research them, but that'd be cheating ;)

With the in-depth questions, do we have to provide reasoning for why we should make such a move? And has anyone correctly guessed the body part that gives the best tell?

Edit: My spelling has been horrendous lately.

I think I'm the first staff member to answer the bonus question - so I'm sticking my neck out here :-)

I would have to say there is no part of the human body that will give you a 100% correct read. Most people may say the eyes because it's very hard to control your eyes. However, any experienced poker play can easily give off other fake tells. I think the most accurate read is the overall reaction from the other player based on your own tells (fake or otherwise). Most player will know what they are going to do within a few seconds, so for example, if I raise and a player pushes all in, I could spend a few minutes debating the call to try and make the other player sweat - I can then look at his reaction and determine whether I really want to make that all in call.

Hope that makes sense :-)

The answer to the tells question is the feet. The next in line would be the mouth and the muscles surrounding the mouth.

The reasoning behind this is quite complex, but I will try to keep it brief.

We break the brain down into three areas: the stem, limbic and neocortex sections.
The limbic brain otherwise known as the "mammalian brain" is the primitive part of our brain that we share with animals, it is the emotional or reactive part of our brain and reacts to outside stimuli in real time and there is very little we can do about it.

So when we feel threatened or happy about our cards, our limbic brain kicks in immediately and gives off these tells, we can then allow our neocortex (the part that makes us human) take over and control and put on fake tells or stop our tell from exhibiting.

So in those second or microseconds between seeing your rockets catch another A on the door you subconciously give off a joyous reaction to your environment.

Now as children we are taught to communicate with our hands, upper body and face. This is bred into us and we use our neocortex to learn these traits and as such; we can lie and deceive with our upper body more successfully than we can with our lower half of the body. It's just the way we communicate.

But when we are happy or frightened we may be able to force our upper body to portray another emotion but we forget about our feet, because we were never taught to communicate with them, so our limbic brain controls most of the action down south.
So when we are happy we tap our feet, anxious we tap faster or move side to side, threatened we freeze and our feet go still, want to escape from a situation and we point them towards an exit, etc.....

I hope you found this educational, next week, how you can use limbic responses to gain a read.

Just posted my answers in.

I can only assume they will be very critically judged! Lets see how it all pans out! Its a very interesting quiz.

I would like to add though Garth, i do not support the statement you made about hands being played the same way 99.9 of the time. Stats such as these even though are based on a consensus of professional players could never reflect such a majority. Also some of the questions fail to provide accurate enough data on stack size and pot size to give detailed answers.

All in all was fun though.... considering it is after midnight it was change of pace to to stimulate to the top half of my body :P

Nathan,

I would advise you to read the questions again, all the information you require is there.
It is not an indepth assessment of your knowledge on fold equity, hand equity or game theory.

In the situations described you would play the hand the same way, almost all the time, especially when they are such generic scenarios. It is a test for poker players of slightly above average skills.

Which questions do you believe don't supply enough data or do you believe can be played differently.

If you want an indepth assessment of yourself as a poker player, go to http://www.donkeytest.com

Feel free to have another attempt at pointing out any flaws if you wish.

The test was fine, the only thing i would have liked to see is more detailed data, such as, exact figures rather than descriptions like you put in a big raise.

Small things like that.

Have you had a look at my test yet though?
