Searching the forum

Postby trishan » Wed Aug 11, 2010 2:51 pm

I am trying to figure out how to do a search on the forum for a phrase with two words. From what I understand if you put a "+" at the start of each word you can get all posts with the two words in it but what I really want to search is "word1 word2" when in that order. Anyone know how to do that? Is there a thread somewhere on how to search the forum?

On that note, and in an entirely unrelated manner, I have spent an hour or so searching the forum for some information as well.

Apparently I have stated on here that it is ok to turn up and register at an event and then walk out, this was in relation to the 10 game qualification for the Grand Final, I don;t recall ever making this comment but it would be nice if anyone could remind me of this or assist me in finding it!

Usually you can use quotation marks or Boolean(?) search functions like "AND" but I can't figure out how to search properly.

Try *:

This forum supposedly has a wildcard operator '*', which should do precisely what you want - [word1 * word2], but anytime I have tried it the results come back indicating "ignored:*" !!??!!
Works fine with Author searches though, ie search for [* kay] returns posts made by Garth OR Brett. Maybe it is in the definition 'partial matches' - I've never heard a wildcard described like that, so perhaps the behaviour is a little different??
But if I enter the search [trying * search] this OP is at the top of the list...

Google has a wildcard operator too, as in [word1 * word2 site:888plforum.com.au] and * will match any 1 or more words between the 2 specified... This will acheive what you want (if Google has the forum content indexed??)

The plus '+' operator shouldn't be neccesary, most search engine syntax assumes you mean AND (+) anyway, only OR and NOT needs be specified (in engines supporting it), and + also has a different meaning on Google altogether anyhow (it means don't substitute synonyms on this word, like [term1 +term2] - when used with no space), so... There are radio buttons for AND/OR searches here on the forum, which takes care of that for you anyhow...

All I have seen so far is you saying quite the opposite, as in "I dont want people to stop supporting venues once they have a GF ticket" and the like, so its seems the comment about reg -> leave seems unlikely...

Is it possible for someone with admin rights (David seems the person probably as he altrered the phpBB code) please change the search results so that clicking one takes you to the POST and not the start of the topic??

I think it depends on what you click on. If you click on the TOPIC in the search result, it goes there, but click on the post subject and it goes to the relevant post.

I used to always click on the topic.

Surprising as it may seem, but Google itself doesn't/hasn't (whatever) index the content of this forum benny the cunt ???? :?

try: grand final site:888plforum.com.au
and you get zero results!

Not sure if this is something to do with Google or the metadata of the site's content pages, or just the way phpBB works or what the reason is....

But it's still possible to use Google Desktop tools (or something similar) to implement a 'Google Search' for a completely private site, so maybe its still possible...

Edit: I tried creating a 'Google Custom Search', specifying it to search the entire site, but still no results show up...

That would be pretty handy dandy.
