Hypothetical Question

Postby Hagar76 » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:35 am

My question is this, if i'm playing an online tourney and i'm on or near the final table with an above average chipstack and i need to leave to do something else (eg i have kids one of them hurts them self) should i a) sit out and ghost the rest of the tourney (which can tend to annoy people), b)chip dump giving a clear adavantage to whoever gets my chips (i will admit i have done this on a final table and got accused of cheating). As there is no TC to take my chips i would be interested in what people think.

sit out... maybe more annoying but much fairer to all other players.
I respect the poker gods, I think that's why they are nice to me!!!

sitting out is the only fair way to do it.

Sit Out - It is the best for other players and YOU!!

Who knows, you may cash or be able to return to the game & WIN if the situation taking you away from the game changes.
May all your pain be champagne!

good point - if you sit out, there is a chance you will finish a few spots higher than you currently are

I agree with sitting out, but from an ethical point of view is it fair that I cash when i'm technically not playing. What if my ghosting cost you a dream team spot? I know that in general most people would not give two s##ts but i'm sure this situation will come up at one stage as we have a very unique system and i would be interested to see how it would be resolved.

you chip dumping or shoving every hand could also cost someone a dream team spot.

i agree, its not great to have to leave whilst playing a final table, but this is probably a pretty rare occurrence so i think if you sit out its all good.

yep. if you say something like "sorry guys, family emergency, have to sit out for a while" in the chat box, then its all good.

I get much more annoyed by people that say they have to go, and then procede to ruin many others tourneys by shoving every hand until they get knocked out.

A situation happened similar to this at our local venue. We were on the final table, and a regular player, who is also an ambulance officer, gets a callout (which happens very rarely in our small town). Now, often these are quite straight forward and dont take long, but sometimes it might take a while.

Our TC (and i think quite fairly) ruled that her stack would keep being blinded out until she either came back, or was blinded out. She ended up 5th, i finished 8th that night, but i think the fair ruling was made.

This wasn't somebody that simply needed to go home, but had a genuine reason for leaving. Not sure if there is an actual rule governing such an occurence, but it definitely fits in with the 'spirit' of the rules/game that has been talked about recently.
Riskers gamble, experts calculate.

Online and live are different I guess.
Online poker has aspects you don't have playing live.

You can sit there in your underwear, swear out loud, watch a movie, whatever...
And, you can just get up and walk away.

That's just by virtue of the fact it's online. You're considered ALWAYS there, even if you're not.

Live, is different. If you can't stay for the end of the tournament, for whatever reason - you forfeit any positions/prizes you might get.
