Over Bets - but not allin

Postby AJG » Fri Sep 10, 2010 12:25 pm

How do you all interpret an over bet of the pot?
And how differently from someone who you almost never see do it, compared to someone who habitually does it?

Some examples to comment on - assume effective stack is 50-60BB at minimum in each case:

60/120 : 1 MP limp, pot is 300 and flop comes 7Image 4Image 3Image BB checks and MP bets 360?

75/150 : Raised HU pot between EP and BTN, pot is 1125 and flop is KImage QImage 2Image , EP bets 1350?

75/150 : Same as above, but flop is double checked, turn brings a 7Image and EP leads for 1350?
-------------Or instead the turn is 7Image?
-------------Or in either case the bet is 1750?

100/200 : 3 way raised pot is 2100 and flop is AImage JImage 9Image, 1 check, bet 1500, both call. Turn is the 2Image which is checked around. The river is the TImage and now 1st player to check the flop leads for 6500 into a 5600 pot?

I know often this depends on the player/history etc, but say you encounter this from an unknown player...
Thoughts?

We had a little chat about it here not so long ago:
viewtopic.php?f=53&t=5275

I think in the end we agreed that overbets must be interpreted in light of any history between players. A lot comes down to metagame. Most often though I overbet when I have the nuts but I know the opponent has a slightly weaker hand that they would not fold to an overbet. Sometimes against Chris Trudgeon who knows this, I overbet when I don't have the nuts because I know Chris will fold. :)

I must admit, I do love trishan's hand history threads.

Flop. $0.20 bet
Turn. $0.50 bet
River. $19.83 all-in bet

:D The funny thing is I get paid off everytime! I think I have a 100% strike rate with my overbets... I find it works particularly well against eastern europeans.

I think you'll find when you step above 10NL that may change slighty.
