821 players !!!

Postby John Miller » Sun Sep 19, 2010 8:39 pm

Yes you heard correctly 821 players attended the inaugural Kedron Wavell Classic.

with $10,000 up for grabs it was a huge day.

Registrations started early at 9am. with hundreds of people lined up outside the club before opening time.
As I sat ready to start and register players it wasnt until 11am that I realised we were going to get smashed with more players than we could seat.

with seating for 624 we had nearly 200 reserves, what a day.

My congrats to Glenn, Sean and the whole team of 888PL Qld, all the feedback from players was positive and really looking forward to the semi finals now in October.

that room looks really well set up.

821 players is just insane, i think thats an all time 888pl record. not sure about victoria, but in SA the biggest is around 550 i think (not 100% sure)

good to see jeff fenech there again, he is certainly working hard for 888

John - no photos of you !!!! What happened there ? ....it was your camera ...maybe we can Photoshop you into some ...haha

Tue 21 Sep - 821 Players at Kedron-Wavell Classic !!
The 10k Kedron-Wavell Classic was held at the salubrious Kedron Wavell Services Club on the 18th of September 2010. An incredible 821 players turned up to represent 888PL venues from all over QLD and Northern NSW. The crowd began to arrive at 7am and the room looked amazing. The doors opened at 11am and after a welcome speech from Glenn Willliams and 888PL Team Member Jeff Fenech it didn’t take long for us to lose our first player. Paul Lloyd Jones moved all in on the first hand of the day with a King High straight only to look down in dismay at an Ace High Straight first hand!!!!! . The standard of poker was incredible and there were some huge hands during the early stages like a straight flush to the queen of hearts hit by Regional QLD superstar Paul Williams. Jimmy Waddell of the Gold Coast flopped quad Jacks and played them perfectly to get another player from North Brisbane PK to commit all his chips.
The 888PL crew did an amazing job of breaking tables and keeping the action moving and the players really got a genuine and professional tournament. It was the regional players from far north and western QLD that really showed their high standards as many of their players went deep. With the top 8 players taking the cash the action was intense as we got down to the last two tables.
The top 16 players were:
Neil Drever
Shane Voller
Jeff Robinson
Barry Murphy
Steven Beale
Shane Skehan
Ben Spires
Ashley Ruck
Michael Hold
John Wadey
Desmond Ballangarry
Ben Lucas
Gary Ciancio
John Roach
Cody Chapman
Amanda Tsang

The short stacks had to make a move and a few of the top 16 players won some close races to stay in contention.
We lost several players quickly and when John Wadey bubbled in 9th place it was time for the Final table.
The Kedron-Wavell Classic Final table was made up of players from all over QLD and Northern NSW and almost every region was represented.
Ashley and Neil found themselves caught up in a Heads up battle but there can only be one winner and the hand that decided it all was:
Asheigh with KK and Neil being put ALL IN with his QJ suited.
The Flop falls 8 9 4
Turn is a K
River a 6
Its all over and Ashleigh Ruck wins one of the biggest tournaments ever held outside of a Casino in Australia.
The top 8 players were:
1. Ashleigh Ruck $5000
2. Neil Drever $2000
3. Desmond Ballangarry $1000
4. Shane Voller $500
5. Barry Murphy $250
6. Steven Beale $250
7. Shane Skehan $250
8. Ben Spires $250

Thanks to everyone that came along and also a big thanks to Darren Davis and the staff at the Kedron-Wavell Services Club for hosting the event.
See you all next time.
