I don't think THEY know where it's going.

It only loosely follows the books initially, and not even in the right order.
From memory in the second or third book, Dexter takes Astor and Cody under his wing and "teaches" him his ways.

They'll hammer the crap out of this season, see what happens,and go from there.

Surely the scene is set for the baby (can't remember name) "born in blood" to become a player later in a future series?

Yeah, with Mad Men it has detracted from the show that I can't back episodes into the next one. Much more satisfying when you can watch 3 in a row.
