keepers can be captain pretty easily (gilchrist and healy were both vice captains)

dan vettori is a captain as well and he is a spin bowler.

typically, bowlers dont make great captains because bowlers are often either too selfish and want to give themselves lots of overs, or they want to share it around too much.

vettori has been criticised because he actually underbowls himself, even though he is clearly the best bowler in their team.

also, a batsman can stand at first slip all day and its much easier to make decisions there instead of having to worry about it whilst bowling 30 overs as well

In fact get rid of the selectors .bring in a new group .
Get rid of the ideology that players can only be from 1st NSW , QLD , then pick token other state players .

This from a West Indies supporter ffs

It doesn't have to be.

But what bowler or keeper could captain right now in the current set-up?

Haddin is no Captain. Our bowlers struggle to maintain their own place in the side at the moment, let alone juggling the captaincy as well.

As for the NSW first Ideaology, I don't subscribe to that theory much anymore.

Based on where they were playing when they were selected for the team, the current breakdown for the players we've used so far:

NSW: (6) Katich, Hughes, Clarke, Smith, Bollinger, Haddin

Qld: (3) Watson, Harris, Johnson

Tas: (3) Ponting, Doherty, Hilfenhaus

WA: (2) Hussey, North

Vic: (1) Siddle

Of the NSW players, only 3 of them played in the first test. I fail to see how 3 players from a state dictates a "NSW first" policy. (Especially when there is no argument regarding Katich and Haddin's place in the side)

As for Hughes and Smith playing at the moment, that I'm not happy with. Ferguson should be in at 6. There has to be a better option than Hughes.

That said, they are 2 of the Top 5 most exciting players under 25 that we have, so if they were in better form I would have them in my side most of the time anyway. We NEED to get game experience into the future players NOW. Khawaja needs to be given a chance too.

Not when we lose another 3 veterans in 1-2 years.

Well it is when he is batting at number 4

Cameron White constantly cops that same criticism at first class level.

I think the NSW bias comes when you look at the NSW State Side. There have been times were that has had 7 former Test players in it at one time, and then the next "big thing" also.

Khawaja isn't getting the call cos of his state. Hughes didn't (he was scoring shedloads) but now he's out of form, but still getting in. Although there aren't too many options

!!!!!

NSW also happens to have a much bigger pool of talent to go fish in.

NSW should really be made to field 2-3 teams in the shield, maybe a GWS shield team, or even rural NSW could likely field one. Wouldn't dilute the competition too much and give players more of a run in the positions the national teams needs them to try out in.

Perfect example of how deep NSW talent pool is.

The 18-year old who replaced Hughes as opener scored an unbeaten century against Queensland yesterday.

That's after he scored 113 against SA on debut a few weeks ago batting down the order when Khawaja, Hughes and Smith were all fighting for a spot in the first test.

Maybe time to try to re-introduce the Canberra side?

I'm interested to see what impact franchising out the Big Bash sides has on the make-up on the rest of the domestic comps.

Good work Harps. Makes drinking that shit slightly worthwhile....

Although the ashes are lost, it isn't all bad. Cricket Australia saves a bucketload of money next week for the Sydney test as most of the team will be staying with their parents
