What you guys might no have taken into consideration is the bulk of flight two players were from regional areas. Many having to be up as early as the flight one players in order to drive the many hours into town.
Even so, in any poker event it is ulimately up to the player to manage his time and energy as best they can. Many Pro players will arrive into another country long before the event they intend to play to both insure they adjust to the climate, are well rested and to begin managing their diet in order to achive the best possible state they can be.
I know there are alot of factors involved in people perceptions of this particluar topic but you must remember a flight system is not a method the NPL invented. It is a very common format used in events. So as i stated earlier. All the Qualifiers knew what flights they were in prior to the event and had a great deal of time to manage the situation.
I would be disapointed to think that anyone would consider this an avenue to explain poor form on the day. All any player can do is give it their best on the day and hope they play well and are not out drawn.
Best of Luck to everyone season two, 2008

Then perhaps you need to re-evaluate the how you play.

Just joking, I'm always awful~
(I should have quoted the part about blaming the setup for poor form)

First flight was a massive disadvantage for me. I was killing it and then heard there was 30 mins till the second break and then soon after that we'd be sitting out for 4 hours. I was not going to wait for 4 hours particularly because I had parent interviews the next day and needed to get myself revved for that.
I know I knew that was going to be the scenario before I played in the final. But it still annoyed me when I had 14k!

Re: WHO HAD THE BEST ADVANTAGE GOING INTO THE FINALS Flt 1 or Fl
which flight did the winner come from ??
Flight one ... yes.
good point Nathan ... time/routine management a key issue in your game plan and how you approach the finals event.
I understand the choice of placing the country regions in the Second flight [ travel time etc... } but also find it interesting that the State top 50 leaderboard entrants who also played in the second flight ...for me and I'll stand to be corrected most of the ' top 50 ' would be from metro/city venues and seemed to be favoured with the ' second flight entry...
but again the winner Steve won from starting in the first flight { he commented that a 4hr hour break would give him time to catch a movie before returning for the combine .. wonder which movie he saw !!! lol.. ].
I still am of the opinon that the State finals be a smaller select qualifiers event at a minimum ---> venue top 5 finalists.
150 venues X top 5 only = 750 runners [ less multi venue qualifiers ! ... State leader Board get 'prize monies ' and regional leaders get monies --/ entry to State finals if needed/qualified.

I think Nathan hit it on the head
Each player has to manage their time either for flight 1 or 2. In fact for the whole W/E
I was in flight 1 and was knocked out with 15mins to go
Would i have played my last hand the same way if in the later flight (flight 2) ???? NO
I dont regret my decision but Thats Poker and you have to roll with the punches

Bob, I think the regional leaderboard thingies are partly there because those guys have very little chance to make the 'top 50' given the huge amount of games the metro players can play per week compared to the regional players.
I like the idea of the chip up to 2k if you are still in and don't have 2k already, but I think another name should still be drawn out otherwise it'd defeat what they're trying to achieve (which I believe to be keeping players at the venue partly because they might still be drawn out).
I'm finding it amusing to see any issues with being in flight 1. Would you rather get up at sparrows fart and drive for up to 4 hours just to get there and spend as much as a whole afternoon and night at the venue to then only have to drive all the way back again?
I don't think a 2 day event is the answer either, that brings things like paying for accomodation into the equation and (with all due respect) if you tried to tell me I had to do that, I'd tell you to <insert rude phrase here>

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Re: WHO HAD THE BEST ADVANTAGE GOING INTO THE FINALS Flt 1 or Fl
Could be 10 flights, and I could be in any of them and I'd be more than happy just to be there.
I would put advantages down to poker ability, skill, luck, nouse, luck and luck. And some skill.
I don't give a toss how long I need to wait or lack thereof when it comes to a tournament that big.
I would happily drive 2 hours for a first flight, find something to do for 4 hours and return. Great day out, regardless of times and distances.

Re: WHO HAD THE BEST ADVANTAGE GOING INTO THE FINALS Flt 1 or Fl
The only reason I went all in on my pocket 4s is because I wasn't waiting 4 hours to come back with a low stack. Did the flight system affect my play? Yes. Do I blame NPL for that? No. Each flight system had its advantages and disadvantages, and each had to work for their qualifiers. Its up to each player on how they play in the conditions they're given.
If we're going to debate how to change, or "fix" the state finals, I wholeheartedly support cutting the numbers to 500 or less.
