Stamping up

Postby Nevah play JJ » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:53 pm

We all know we need to buy drinks or dinners at venues to get stamped up and I for one have absolutely no issue in doing this.
However, having said that, I do have one gripe and I kinda just wanted to get other thoughts about this.

At several of the venues I do play at, it is a requirement to spend at least $3 to get one stamp. Ok that is reasonableish no real issue with this.

But several times over, I see other players purchasing 2 stubbies of beer which I think equals about $8.60 and in return get only 2 stamps.

That is .40c off a third stamp, yet most of the bar staff won't do that 3rd stamp, because they state it is not $9.00

Does that seem unfair to others also?

So that means to stamp up they have to buy 8 beers or drinks.
How does that promote responsible drinking? I don't think it does, think about how much it costs for a soft drink, as a non drinker I have to purchase over 6 cans of drink or bottled water to get stamped up, is it my fault I am a non drinker????

It makes for a very expensive night or day out.

I just want to state, I believe that most of us as players support venues, why I see players pump $50 through poker machines in breaks alone.

I just believe for the sake of .40c or under $1 there should be that third stamp.

Thanks for reading my gripe

Been discussed before...

I think we all think that $$ values are not the way to go, and the "item" is.

ie;

Schooner, Soft Drink - ONE Stamp
Pint, any bottled alcoholic drink, spirits, red bull - TWO Stamps
Meal - FOUR stamps (or three, I guess it depends on the venue, the meals etc)

Sorry, didn't realise it had been discussed before.

This issue is really being brought into focus lately in the venues I do play at.

I do wish to say also, why should soft drink drinkers be penalised because they do not drink alcohol.

We probably pay a little bit less I agree, but again it does not seem fair we have to buy so much (most of which I do not even get the chance to drink during the night) which only goes to waste in the end.

But I do hear alot of the other players stating they are cutting down or not going to particular venues because of the lack of consistancy with stamping.

On the flipside, venues need to make money, and obviously the more money the better else they couldn't afford to keep themselves as an NPL venue.

More stamps for more money is logical.

Mind you, they make more on a coke than on a bottle of alcohol...

As a non-drinker I've got to agree with this. But then people will complain that 2 stamps for a soft drink is too much.

Its hard to find a middle ground :(

Well that's one thing to come out of free poker..

Never been so many people in pubs who don't drink.

I absolutely agree about the venues needing to make money.

But they also have responsibilities as in promoting responsible drinking and gambling. No doubt the venues more than make enough money from NPL players.

I for one cannot state now much I appreciate that the pubs put on free poker and how much I love to play NPL.

I just can't help but feel for the sake of 0.40c there should be a third stamp.

There's a couple of ways the $ value per stamp can work...

One is just be damn cheap like @ pooraka (love your work tony)

The other is if the venue has everything priced at whole dollar amounts which is mostly the case at Swish. Just make sure you don't get served by Hannah.

Otherwise, set stamps per item is the way to go and is far less confusing. Several venues are taking the step of putting a 'stamp menu' on display on the bar which is great cos you can tell at a glance if they are rorting you or not. Most of them seem to fall in the 'not' category.

And yes David that's absolutely the case. Some venues would do well to remember why all these people are suddenly visiting pubs they wouldn't have before.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

In your case - yes, 40c should be a reasonable amount to "up" to the next stamp. I must say, I haven't been to a venue like that for a LONG time.

by the way, I don't think giving less for soft drinks and more for alcoholic drinks is really promoting irresponsible drinking.. it's not like "drink ten beers, get a bottle opener" or something like that.

The venues do make money - but remember they have to pay the NPL to hold the event, has to break even somewhere. And if there's no benefit, they close it.

I just also believe it is a matter of respect.

Some of the bar staff and venues really do treat us like they are doing us the favour.

To a small degree they are.

But I would not be frequenting any of the places I do now if it was not for NPL.
