Re: NPL needs an overhaul
Two wins Nevah, Win it rains it pours. Congratulations.
Long Post.
Garth's Point is very valid, especially about the skills gap between New and Experienced players.
I am just going to start letting everyone divide their posts up into two different categories.
1. Good for the game
Anything that keeps it fair for everybody. Increased stacks to a certain extent, because as Garth said about the skills gap increasing.
2. Bad for the game
Anything that will make you feel like you have a better shot of winning or advancing to a different tournament unfairly. E.g Having a rule go in favour for you on the night, but you know is the wrong decision.
So with that.
1. Good for the game
Adapting your play to the blinds and also to the chipstacks on the table. Some times your just not ever going to have that big stack, where you can continue your bet or try and manuever your opponent into a bluff or any other kind of situation. This involves into the meta game principles, where you have to consider table image, playing tendencies, Tilt factor, agression levels, hand ranges. E.t.c Before you start to do the tricky stuff.
Get the basics first, E.g. bet sizing. don't min bet 50 into an 800 pot. Being able to read people, try and put them on a range of cards. Narrow those cards down, to see how much of a chance you have in the game. Work out the odds, and outs. And you will find that your game is a lot better in the long run. And will improve your poker all over the place.
Having new players turn up, and having a chance at competing. I remember at one tournament, a girl brought a friend along to the game, we convinced her to play, and she lasted to the first break. When i saw her still in, said awesome stuff. She lasted to the 2nd break as well, however just missed out on the points. The smile she gave, and the thumbs up and saying she will be back next week. Is what we (the staff) truly do want from our players.
Bad for the game:
Unnecessary arguments
Either between players, or between players that think they know everything and TD's.
The main idea of this game is to have fun. If we have players come up to us, and start arguing about redraws that they were in the pokie machine area or stuff like that and should be allowed back in. We have to remind them, that basically it is a players responsibility,
Another bad for game. People who are stalling for points. We are not talking a little bit of time, we are talking about full minutes. Getting the deck counted. Taking 2 -3 Minutes on preflop decisions on raggy hands E.t.c E.t.c. If you have to cheat that badly to get into the points, then you really need to question your playing abilities.
My 2c that last bit.

Re: NPL needs an overhaul
What an awesome thread.
Garth: Good to see you're listening to the players - I suggested prizes for venue leaders earlier in the year but it was knocked back. Nice to see you're open to suggestions though. And yes, it was the best post of your life.
benny the cunt: You mentioned players "forcing" themselves to go to venues for a top 5, state finals berth. Its exactly the same with regional leaderboards. I'm currently sitting 5th on the B&G leaderboard (top 4 get cash) and the only reason I'm going to every game I can is because I wanna get some points finishes and finish in the money. I have my state finals position wrapped up (I hope, unless I have some awful luck) and if NPL didn't have cash money for the regional leaderboard, I'd probably only be going to 5 of the 10 games left.
Nevah: Stop winning, dammit. You'll have more than me soon

garth: well done on listening to the players, i hope something good comes out of these discussions.
Brett: you might wanna remove that link to your post about playing online, talking about rakeback is prolly taking that no gambling mention a bit far. (i know it was an old post, but i just noticed the link then.)

Sorry guys it was really gonna be a short reply and then I just got carried away with the moment. I hope it's makes a good read for you all.
Offering new ideas and suggestions from this forum alone can help improving or bettering our NPL. Notice I said "OUR" NPL as we are NPL. Okay we don't own it, we don't run it, but we can certainly offer fresh ideas to make it even better than it is today.
Management aren't stupid. They know we all want to play bigger stacks, and be able to play in larger tourneys with bigger and better incentives. They know, because they read our posts, our queeries, suggestions and our open discussionson on here about our likes and dislikes as if were in someones home chatting amongst ourselves.
The forum is no different to their staff meetings. Where I assume amongst other things they discuss what is happening at the various venues, why some are pulling out and yet others are thriving. All of the who, what, where & why questions and answers are bandied around and hopefully they can come up with a solution.
I asked myself, why is one venue better than another????
Is it, their flexible stamping system, YES
Is it, their great food and or bar staff, YES
Is it, a good TD and or TA, who make it an enjoyable nite, YES
Is it because we prefer the large or small venue, YES & YES
If all of the above are what makes us happy and keeps us going back to those venues then surely the opposite is why we don't. It's that simple, keep the Punters happy and your in a win, win, situation.
Take the Brahma Lodge Indoor Sports Centre that had it's first tourney on the 30th April. With only 4 weeks to go there was a chance for 5 extra punters make it to the finals.
So, for most of the 46 punter who turned up it wasn't the points we after it was making the final 5 over the 4 weeks remaining in the comp to make the finals.
The place wasn't anthing really special, after all it's a sports centre not a pub or club. All the pool tables were gone so the NPL tables looked a little lonely in such a large area but it wasn't cold either. LOL.
There wasn't any hot food but they listened to our suggestions. Their drinks prices were great, their flexible stamping was great and most of all they listened to what would or could help keep their NPL punters happy and still make them some money.
By the second break they had some pizzas delivered and were gratefully consumed by all of us. They were happy, we were happy, well some more than others LOL and it was a good nite of poker.
Last Wednesday they had some snags on bread, (no onions grrrrr) bought a bottle of Brandy for me LOL and the 65 runners enjoyed more of the same standard of stamping plus more Pizzas on the second break.
Again it was an excellent field of players loved watching (Grrrr) the final table (Rocco rocks) and the venue hosts were terrific. And I better mention our ASH. Yes he is a man of few words, and yes he does have a sense of humour, you just need to get in there and drag it out sometimes. Keep it up M8 it's all good.
