Role models for the people.....

Postby Nevah play JJ » Wed May 21, 2008 12:16 pm

With all the chat being bantered around at the moment in regards to role models and the likes this leads me to ask the following question:

What do YOU think makes a player both a respected player and to a degree an "NPL spokesperson for the people"?

Do you think it is the number of wins?
The number of times they are on a final table?
Personality?

I would love to hear other thoughts in regards to this.

(Edited by me - so as to hopefully word it right. :) )

As the OP nevah, you really should put your thoughts down and hen ask for people's opinions and what their thoughts are on this issue.
Obviously a player's thoughts on a community leader would differ to mine.
But I strongly believe that poker playing ability has very little to do with it, unless they gain their popularity from a leaderboard or performance at large finals, such as Deakin and Roger H.

Garth, I would put Roger G as a role model, on his playing ability and respect for the game, however I wouldn't say he's an NPL spokesperson.

I couldn't even tell you who Roger H & Jason Deakin are either.

I don't believe any one player can be seen as the "NPL spokesperson" because there are many different types of people & players out there.
I'm not perfect. I'm what perfect aspires to become

Players I respect might be different to others.

Wins? No. I don't really count wins in the formula of players I respect.

I respect players who know their game. Players who I can tell, continually learn and teach themselves, ands learn from their mistakes. You have to watch players a lot to see this, but I do.

I respect an analyser. Someone who appears to work through a hand from start to finish, even when it's almost completed.

I respect the helpers. The people who don't think they are above the game, but rather a part of it - and help in many ways, with new players, with rules (without appearing over the top) and who add to the social atmosphere.

Then, maybe, final tables ;)

Well, if you're talking about a respected player, poker ability would come into it a little bit. And how they conduct themselves on and off the table. I don't see anyone looking up to a wanker.

NPL spokesperson for the people... don't really think you'll find one. We're not a union :P

Agree. There are players out there that I will seek the opinions of as I know they have a reasonably intimate understanding of NPL and have expressed considered views consistiently with regards to the NPL.

I do not however, consider them NPL voices.

Very much. I think it is great when new players are shown a "good" way of doing things by more experienced players.

I agree 100% with Bacon

Roger G would be a great candidate for an NPL role model. Very Skilled player and always a gentlemen. I think it would be nice to see him on the forum more but i know that he has a very important role with the ATO which doesn't leave much time for such things.

Matty G is also a great role model! I could name a heap of players that i see as good role models 90% of our players are great and love what we offer (which in turn makes my job great)

Just some of my thoughts
