Spokesperson isn't something I would go with either, but there definitely are community leaders with the NPL playing community.

Back to being serious for just one moment...

Would it seem logical to have a small group of people in each venue that can be someone that is a role model for beginners?

EG..
When I came in as a new player, I had NO idea what to do and lets be honest, the TD only has so much time they can explain all the nitty gritty of the games finer points to someone.


In that case, can we perhaps have a person that is delegated as a person to whom a newbie can be directed to get just the basic run downs so that they are not so overcome by the small things, like the chip values, the card card cutting and shuffling... etc...

If I had not been such a poker buff, I think I would have personally given up after the first game, because it really is frightening to see all these people that do have the game together.

Some people are helpful when it comes to beginners, but to be doing it all the time can become tedious. As continually having to explain the game all the time, you don't always want to take the newbies chips even tho you could!!

I know that when I was running tourneys, I would sit new players down and run them through some example hands and so forth until they were somewhat more comfortable. A Learners table if you like. As trust was established, a regular group used to play for fun before the game began and these players would then teach.

That is ok - but not to sit with during the game all the time.

That is a good point Shannon and to a huge degree I do agree.

I often see people walk past and really take an interest in what is happening with NPL tables, but are often too afraid to ask so they can at least feel confindent to come along the next week to try it out.

I do also understand the burdons of always having to be the one to "introduce" newbies to the way NPL is run.

I guess I was just trying to put an idea out there....

i had a decent grasp of poker before NPL as i had been playing for about 3 years before, but i was still really nervous before my first game.

i think it is important to remember that we were all NPL newbies and sh*t scared at some point too, and there was someone welcoming at our first game that made us feel better (dakota in my case)

Yeah I think having a "coach," to watch over new players during the tourny is a bit ludicrous if you ask me.

If you're that shocked/frightened by poker chip values, card shuffling etc, why are you even playing poker? Surely you must know at least a little bit about poker before sitting down at the table, I can't think of anyone going in 'blind' (pun definitely intended).

NPL doesn't need something like this, in my experience the veterans of the game help out new players well enough. Any time I've sat with a new player, if they're unsure of something I'll let them know what they have to do, (or can do) and if I don't there's another 3 people that will.

I do enjoy hearing new ideas like this put forward, though.
