USB Video Capturing

I'm looking for something i can buy which will convert video (ie from a video camera) onto my computer. I've seen stuff around which inputs RCA and goes through a USB port in your Hard Drive where you can then manipulate onto a DVD or something using software. Has anyone else done this before and can offer any advice?

Bought that exact same one mate, and it's brilliant.

Mind you, don't expect perfect quality - it can only record up to a certain screen size. That said though it's done what I wanted it for, which was to record music videos from foxtel.

The one I got came with it's own program, which I found pretty functional as well.

Hmmm, I'm trying to convert a touch football Grand Final to DVD, I wonder whether this method would be the best one to maintain the quality?

Depends on what it is currently on. If it's on a camcorder - use a cord to plug it into any usb slot, most camcorders will be recognised by windows well enough to be able to copy everything over using windows media player - and in full quality.

If what you have is on a vcr, then the usb capture card should do well enough for your purposes. VCRs aren't the best quality around, so chances are you won't lose much quality if any.

All depends what format the original is on. VHS? Video8/MiniDV?

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. I think it's on a Video8/MiniDV. So I'm after a solution to "computerise" this footage, but also have a solution that will allow me to do other "computerisation" other old VHS that I have.

a simple solution is to use a dvd recorder; if you have one, a lot of people do nowadays, although obviously if you have a PVR (HDD only) this will not work.

at home i have a an NEC 80 gig HHD recorder/ DVD recorder.

in the front it has a mini-DV port (so you can plug your camera straight into the front) and of course AV-in (RCA plugs)

i had footage on a camera so i recorded this to HDD and then burnt it to a dvd where i could then copy across to computer as required.

quality was not noticably different to the tape-recorded footage

i bought it a while ago (not for that purpose, i bought it to record tv), and it was about 300 bucks then - im sure you could get them for much cheaper now.
