I don't know how Kim held on with his short stack, but he did.

Whats the idea/advantage behind it (TV Ratings i supose)

It's the first time they have done it.
It's so ESPN can televise all the previous events, and first 6 days of the main event, then televise the final table on an almost live basis. It also gives time to promote the players, get sponsors, turn them into superstars etc... and trying and get the ratings back for televised poker.
Everyone knows who won the main event, so when its usually shown months later they arent getting the ratings they think they should be getting so they are delaying it and showing it live.
