More likely that is so they could recoup $$ on the sports they didn't have time to broadcast themselves? Like what they did with foxtel with the footy.

they paid nearly a billion dollars for the rights to the footy for 5 years.

i bet they paid nowhere near that for the olympics

$780 million for 5 years, over the 2 stations (+ Fox).

Olympics - the IOC wanted $130 million for London, dunno if Nein paid that.

So, AFL is $156 mill per season, for 26 weeks.
Olympics is $130 million for 4 weeks.

That tells me they spent more on securing the Olympics.

*Edit*

Nine & Foxtel secured 2010 & 2012 for $117million.

Still, $156mil into 26 = $6mill per week.
And $117mill into 8 weeks = $14.625mill per week.

And the Olympics will allow many sports at the same time. It is suggested that Foxtel will have 8 simultaneous channels & Nein will have 3 (due to HD & multi-channelling laws being available by 2010)
I'm not perfect. I'm what perfect aspires to become

fair enough bacon, well researched, i couldn't be assed doing this myself.

question - why couldn't they have put the olympics on 7hd and had the footy on standard definition this year?

then at least people with HD boxes could have had the choice, rather than noone having the choice

I'm led to believe that once a tv station purchases the rights to telecast something, it can still be sold-on to other stations... this may explain why SBS also has some coverage.

I think FOX sports do the same thing where they buy the rights to something then sell it to the FTA stations in smaller chunks or some such thing.

Does anyone think that we are all finding out fast where the line is for a tv station paying too much? I ask this because it seems that the amount of ads being packed in to help cover the cost is now having a negative impact on the viewing quality, which begins to be self-defeating.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Speaking of $$, has anyone heard the CRAP that John Coates guy is sprouting about how we need to spend extra money on elite sports or else we'll all be rooned!?

I don't know about anyone else on here, but the thought of my tax money going to artificially prop up our medal count doesn't really do it for me. Aside from not taking it from me in the first place (that one is for you Nathan), what about hospitals or better pay for teachers or something?

Anyway, the whole point of our sports funding program is to get average joes out and a little bit more active. Who on here has been inspired to participate in more sporting events because some person you've never met, managed to devote enough of their life to swimming up and down a black line to come first?

Sure, put money into community sports, but the Olympics, and elite sports, where 80+% of the funding goes, doesn't inspire me. Hell, I was more inspired on my last trip to Para Hills to consider playing a team sport than I am from watching the Olympics - was a Thursday night and the fields were full of people playing sport, far more appealing, and what is more, i could actually see myself doing it. Not quite like the Olympics.

On a slightly different note, has anyone else been offended when the media exclaim someone has "failed" when in fact they have "won" silver? As stated in another thread, I'm partial to a "winner takes all" approach, but being at the games means you have "won" far more often than you have lost.

I really need to write a rule for my firewall to ban me from this site whilst I'm supposed to be studying ;)

Matty, there's no way I'm even going to start a discussion about our tax dollars with you ;)

for the sake of the discussion, pretend its not our money, but some one elses - are they achieving the ends they set out to? which is to inspire people to play more sport.

One of the B&G'ers, (is it Matt?), has done sports science - i'd be interested in his opinion on the matter...

I guess it's the intrinsic value of this they are focused on. How many million Australians tuned in to the Olympics at some stage?
