Cash Games - When to cut and run

Postby bennymacca » Tue Sep 16, 2008 9:42 am

I was wondering what people's thoughts are on leaving a cash game when you are winning.

Last night i multi tabled 2 NL holdem micro limit tables, buying in for 10 bucks each table.

i had a golden run of cards, and within 30 hands (15 on each table roughly), i had turned that 20 bucks into 34.

over the next hundred or so hands, i grinded away, staying about the same, but then pretty much on queue i got unlucky on both tables (got my kings cracked in about a 15 buck pot), and i ended up just down overall for the session, cashing out with about 18.

what do people do in this situation? is it better to bank some winnings and move to another table and start again, or is it better to stay on the soft table and hope for a big payday.

is there an amount at which people cash out? double their money? triple?

let me know your thoughts

Take the profit and run. stick around for a circuit then leave.

:-). I got up to 30 something dollars and got tapped over the next 40 hands.

So yeah know the feeling. Won most of it back in Sit N Go, and a step 2 ticket to Seoul. :-). So account up, just a little. :-)

I dabbled last night for a bit before bed and after getting down to just under half my starting stack, I managed to slowly build it back up to near the starting stack a couple of times, drop a little, then get over it by about a 1/3 only to drop just below my inital buy in again within 15 odd hands. By this stage I was starting to get tired and at 2 skittles below my start I said 'nuff's enough'.

Which is something I don't do nearly enough. Just stop playing when I've lost a bit of interest or am tired -- regardless of being up or down. Accept the loss, or profit and move on. So I agree with taking the profit and smiling but definately don't show poor form and leave the table immediately after taking a big win.

yeah. i think its bad etiquette to leave straight away - even if its only a micro limit online game. 1 orbit and then get out of there

I'm led to believe that it is indeed poor form to get up and leave immediately after winning big.

But I'd do it everytime.

They had the opportunity to win those chips while they were playing the hand. They didn't win them. Pass them a tissue.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Firstly, you shouldn't MT cash games. Sit N'Goes yes, but cash no.
Play six-handed not 9 and watch everyone very closely.
When u raise, always make it 4x BB no matter if its AA or AK or 89s or 77. This way no-one can put you on a hand.
Second, leave when you want, you think "Fritz78" from Germany cares? Nope!

I play $1/$2 tables.
Always buy in with table max. ($200 in this case)
If i lose $50+ i'll top back up to $200

STOP LOSS: $200
STOP WIN: $800+

Explain why multitabling is bad?

If you are playing one table, with 25% of your bankroll, you are not covering the variance and swings that you can do if you are playing with 25% spread over 4 tables at a lower limit.

In the same rate using the multi tabling you can increase your win rate because you are playing a level down which you should effectively be able to crush.

Also means a lot of your preflop decisions about what hands to play are significantly easier.

I agree with Brett, however I'm one of those that simply prefers NOT to multi-table as I feel my performance suffers greatly as I'm having to spread my attention around and can't focus as much as I'd like to.

Naturally, something like poker tracker helps with this as there's more info at a glance - but I still just prefer not to.

I was wondering the same as Brett - I've always multi-tabled for the reasons he mentions.

i seem to multi the cash games and single-table the tournaments and SNGs

i figure that in tournaments, there is a lot more of an opportunity to use strategy to push all in to steal etc. in cash games, its not as important
