If they touch the muck at all they're gone.
Face-up just means he'll look even sillier.

Bob: He mucked his cards face down. His fault.
I wouldn't have given him any chips.

Re: STRADDLERS!!!
In reference to Shannons question, the situation is if it was in a tournament, the cards are to be shown face up as soon as there is no more possible betting taking place evn if one player folds their cards face down, must have a showdown. eg: if a player is all in and has been called even if they know they have no possibility of winning the pot.
In a cash game it can be a little different, If it is just a case of player error not realising that there was an all in the ruling and they then fold their cards face down, they can take the side pot if any but cannot take claim on the main pot. You may get a case where the dealer may inform the player, that there is an all in player, just to keep the peace, it becomes a sticky situation if you automatically just grab the players cards and muck them. More amicable to just say "theres an all in player."
In regards to Bob B's question as soon as one player has tabled cards for any other player to lay claim to a pot, they too must also table their cards eg: both cards must be laying flat on the table face up. As soon as the hand has been tabled the hand is then recognised as being a contestant for the pot.
Even if the player shows the whole table what he had, he must still table his cards.

We've done it before at a home game. Sure. All fairly intoxicated and it gets funny when you have two more people doing it again afterwards. Doesn't take long for the giggles to start.
Will dance for your chips!
