I can see both sides of this, being a previously "hard-core" player for several seasons before coming to my senses and thinking "Wait, I'm going to be at poker anyway, might as well get paid for it...."

As a player I became mates with several TD's, friendships that have only flourished since I started working for NPL. But I can truly say I never understood the "expectations" on a TD/TA until I experienced it personally. For starters, players are not the only ones we have to worry about, for we have 2 masters at all times. The punter, and the venue.

We are hosts, mentors, mediators, police, salespeople & leaders all rolled into one. We all have our own strengths and weakness, and we try to utilise these assests as best as we can to provide the BEST game of poker we possibly can.

99.99% players already know what I'm saying, and most can even empathize with our situation. That said, it's nothing like experiencing it for yourself.

The rare few who do expect too much, and in my experience at least, generally have a reason for this. Only one occasion in my time with NPL has a situation occured where the punter was a regular NPL player i.e. All the others player would claim another free poker league as their prefered provider.

The only reason I mention this is different leagues have different interpretations of situations, which said player would try to push onto NPL. Not right or wrong, just different, much the same as different TD's coming to different conclusions.

People are different. Tolerance is needed. In all situations.

I would partially agree with this, but that said, nothing is ever going to be perfect. I'm happy to accept the "at times" mantle in this case, as I know a concerted effort is being made towards that consistency.

At my first (and only) game with a "certain provider" my mates and I were feared because we could see marked cards on a deck and knew to post our blinds before being prompted by the TD..... And we had dice for our dealer button...

Yes TD's have it hard are have to try to please everyone at the same time. But seriously guys, don't give us the 'you don't know how hard it is till you have done it speech' cos thats ridiculous in my opinion.

Try being a nurse, childcare worker, police officer, teacher and any one of about 1000 other jobs and TD's will realise that they have it good.

Yes the pay is pretty crappy and they have to deal with pissed idiots on some occasions, but seriously, you get to watch, play and be involved in poker FOR A LIVING. Lots of people would love to be able to do this.

Deal with it, or don't choose to be a TD.

The pay is pretty crappy?

I tend to disagree. But then again everyone tends to believe they are underpaid for the role they perform.

Caleb, awesome post.

Personally I think Macca was a little harsh because I didn't see anything you said here as being anything but insight into a night as a TD.

As for the pay.. I say, give them more.
Always give them more. LOL  ;)

i think matthew was just saying that poker for a job is pretty awesome - but with that comes its drawbacks, which are part of the territory.

just like teaching - get 10 weeks of holidays, but have to put up with little shits for the other 42 weeks of the year

im not asking to know how much td'd get paid i dont think it is necessary
and this realy doesnt have anything to do with anything

but

did you know you can get $22 an hour now for general vinyard work like pruning, dirving tractors etc

that is pretty attractive money for unskilled, untrained work

blew me away when i was talking to some vinyard owners the otherday the amount of money that needs to be paid to get workers on farm

now consider that and you wonder what our td's get paid to put up with us lot and smile at the same time
Does anyone know how to make money playing uno vs 6 year olds, its about the only card game i get to play these days.
