steve waugh was the most selfish prick on the planet when he batted.

bevan used to do exactly what he needed to to win.

why win with 5 overs to spare when that takes more risk than needing 5 of the last over? (alright 4 of the last ball was cutting it a bit fine, but hey)

People are fickle!

Being selfish is good. Being selfish is valuing your wicket! Every batsman wants to be not out because it means they held on to their wicket. Obviously they need to score along the way, rotate the strike, etc - but really, in test cricket with the goddamn concentration required just to not get your head knocked off I really doubt there's anyone selfish in a bad way.

i make my comment with regards to the many times that steve waugh batted on when he was on 60 just to get his 100 only to declare the innings once he had achieved this - when most people said he should have declared earlier. it was only our (nearly best ever) bowling attack that saved his skin.

and how, late in his career, he bowled himself for sometimes 10 overs a match trying to be the first person to get 10000 runs and 100 test wickets - that is selfish

mark waugh was a much better player than steve - pity he never got a really big score

Maybe "Mark had the potential to be a better player" would be a better way of putting this? Stats, whilst never telling the whole story, never lie :D

Steve W was a great of the game - the numbers do tell that story conclusively - and he was a great captain to boot. You imply he was lucky to have the bowling attack he did - of course he was, but you can only infer he was lucky in the victories get captained if the team outperformed (which they didn't). Interesting discussion tho, and one of the reasons I love cricket :D

there is no doubt that steve waugh was a great of the game - and i do admire his determination when batting, especially that 200 he scored against the west indies.

but what i am alluding to is the fact that when it was time for a change bowler, steve would always bring himself on - and end up bowling 10 friggin overs, instead of maybe 2 or 3. - just so he could pump his stats up.

as far as a captain went, i really don't rate him that highly - purely because of the cattle he had at his disposal - i think blind freddy could have captained that team and been successful.

i mean they had john buchanan as coach, and even that tool couldn't stop the aussies from doing well.

i think what alan border did in pulling the team out of the doldrums in the late 80s was much better of a captaining effort.

i think mark taylor was the one that laid the ground work for steve waugh to follow - it wasn't really that hard for waugh. same with ponting until recently. i think now is the time where we will really see whether ponting is a good leader, because its pretty easy to captain a side when you only have to worry about batting once per test match.

lastly, i think its a great shame that shane warne never got the chance to captain australia - i think he could have been one of the best captains australia has had - pity he couldn't keep his dick to himself.

I dont know why you guys keep arguing about the best captain, we all know that Australia's greatest captain of the past 30 years was Kym Hughes
Does anyone know how to make money playing uno vs 6 year olds, its about the only card game i get to play these days.

Man, is this gona sound like a copout

sorry mate, not gonna happen, at this stage its looking like i will be playing in the B's this year and with me not playing this weekend due to poker it is even more likely that i may not get a game for a while.
Wasnt planing on playing a lot this year, broke my pb last match last year with a 68 so it might be time to retire ungloriously.

Saying that I hope Kym taylor slay's you to all ends of the park
