well in the epl i would describe most of the top teams as having more than one, but in this situation i would say yes torress is our marquee player as the import costing huge dollars.

Gerrard is probalby the best in the world at the moment but, torress fills the bill to what i consider a marquee player.
Does anyone know how to make money playing uno vs 6 year olds, its about the only card game i get to play these days.

Smackies for you krunchie!

That's quite ridiculous IMO.

Torres and Keane cost similar amounts.

Gerrard is better than Torres.

EPL has nothing like a marquee player, I refer you to Chelsea who could field two teams of them :P
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

I refer to the quote by me pete,

there is no doubt that gerrard is the better player, i think he is the best in the world.

I was refering to my belief that there is marquee players in each team and he isnt it.

you cant tell me the epl doesnt have them, what the hell do you think robinho is .

I'm assuming that when you say a marquee player in the EPL you are thinking along the lines of 'a star player who cost a lot of money'.

I did take in your comment about Gerrard, and I agree - he's absolutely brilliant. Which is why Torres couldn't be referred to as a marquee player. I believe he's more accurately described as one of multiple brilliant players in the team. He is certainly the star striker, however.

Robinho is one of many big money signings that Man city will make now that they have new owners who make Mr Ambramovich at Chelsea look like a peasant.

Man Utd - have a team full of them.
Chelsea - I've already mentioned.
Arsenal - you could argue Fabregas but he wasn't that expensive cos he's been there since he was 15 or something.
Liverpool - have a few themselves, Mascherano wasn't cheap and he's probably the best player in his position in the world.
Hull - you could say Giovani and I'd agree.
Stoke - nobody.
West Brom - nobody.
Sunderland - Cisse is only on loan and they have several decent players costing similar amounts.
Aston Villa - balanced team with no superstars.
Portsmouth - same as Villa.
West Ham - same as Villa.
Blackburn - same as Villa.
Middlesborough - Mido stands out but mainly cos the rest are crap.
Everton - you must be joking me :P
Newcastle - one could argue Michael Owen (or Ameobi LOLOLOLOLOL )
Wigan - Zaki is a loan signing and yes, he's a gun.
Fulham - absolutely nobody.
Bolton - same as Fulham.
Tottenham - have several good players without a big standout.
Man city - also spent large on Jo who plays for Brazil with Robinho.

I reckon that yep, I can tell you that largely across the board most of the teams don't have what I would refer to as a marquee player.

There are certainly plenty of absolutely standout players but they are often not alone at the clubs they play for.

i think Krunchie does have a valid point however

A player like Torres creates a lot more interest in the Liverpool FC then someone like Steve Gerrard can, Torres has won a euro so he's been on the world stage and being of spanish origin he is able to generate a larger supporter base then a Gerrard

thanks steve thats exactly the idea i was trying to get at

my idea of a marquee player is one that creates interest and therefore revenue for the club, usually outside the clubs imediate place of origin. ie interstate or overseas.

for me the idea of a marquee player isnt a skills issue its a popularity and money generating one.

Gerrard and Keene are wonderful players but torres is a world known player who brought with him a fanbase from outside of the country.
