Regional and State leaderboards

I think I see where you are coming from, one chip.

It seems as though you'd like a state leaderboard that actually shows exactly that... who is doing the best out of all the players in the state.

If I'm correct in that assumption, that brings us to a discussion about exactly what to include on such a leaderboard.

We have touched on this previously but don't let that stop anyone from commenting further because I think it's something that certainly needs to be implemented for whatever reason or purpose.

Personally, I think it's initially only going to be good for bragging rights and not for prizes or awards. But there's no substitute for saying 'look at the scoreboard buddy!'

Garth raised another valid point, NPL absolutely does need to reward those that play mega amounts of games per week/month/season/whatever. It's clear that they inject a lot into the general NPL coffers and they do deserve something for their efforts.

So really, there'd be multiple leaderboards all having a different purpose. But I think that's good because then a lot more players have something to aim for. Couple that with the new formats and zomg it's crazy how exciting it all is again.

I don't know how there'd not be room on the NPL website for links to more leaderboards but I do know that if it was left to Steve I'd die of natural causes before it actually happened

I think total average would work though one chip.

If you are constantly winning of FT'ing final tables of fields in excess of 80, is that not a better performance than FT'ing the same amount of times but only in fields of 40+.

I think it's easier to consistently perform in those smaller fields than the large one.

So just because players can achieve bigger TOTAL points in a region such as the Metro West region it would balance out as to constantly finish in the top 3 of a 80+ field is a lot more difficult than a regular 30 - 50 field.

I'm writing this whilst I am at a tournament so sorry if it doesn't make sense. I will fix up later.

I would like to give you some figures I have looked at to see how the state leader board would look if we used some of the suggestions being made in here.

season 1/2007 winner (his second win) Mr Alf Morley, played 83 games, pointed 51 times and made 30 final tables for 3 wins.

Nick Simeonidis won it season 2/2007 playing 90 games, pointing 45 times, making 36 final tables for 2 wins.

season 3/2007, I won it playing 43 games, pointing in 19 of them, making 13 final tables for 3 wins.

I did it again in season 2/2008 playing 50 games, pointing in 25 of them, making 17 final tables, but did not win one game.

In season 3/2007, from the start -3/7 til 25/7, I had played 18 games, pointed in 11 of them, already making 8 final tables for 3 wins with points of 155, 119, 143. I could have stopped then, and my average would have been over 100.

these figures are based on information available on the NPL website. It is a great set up and I must send congrats to whoever did it, I love visiting ... if you want more info, use the stats. My guess is that the leaderboard will not have been much different with the new points system compared to say, using 30% of our scores or other methods suggested.

the old points system had players running from venue to venue, putting down their name and running to the next venue - hence the 80+ games. This also introduced some unsavoury behaviour as players appeared to be playing at 2 different venues at the same time ... HHmmm???

Use this info to help source a fairer way, let me know if you need any more.

I forgot to mention ... alf and nick won on the old points system, after that, from season 3/2007, it worked on the way it does now.

All of those stats on the webpage were asked for by SA players on this forum and I asked Steve to implement it.

If you like those stats wait to see what Steve and I have been working on for next year. It's looking good.

Rosemary, those are decent stats by those players (including yourself).

This makes me wonder if discussion by yourself about how the "leaderboard" is worked out has a basis in wanting it to actually be a leaderboard so some chump who gets lucky 15 times doesn't overshadow someone elses good work?

I share similar sentiments if that's the case.

But people need to understand that winning that leaderboard really doesn't mean as much as it perhaps should mean. All it really means at the moment is player X's best 15 games averaged out better than player Y's best 15 games. The rest of the games FT'd or pointed in get overlooked almost completely - and I think that's a shame.

Qualifying for what's soon to be the Championship weekend's Main Event on a regular basis is more of an achievement IMO, particularly if it's done at a venue (or venues) with large numbers. It better demonstrates a consistent skill level and is more worthy of respect from other players.
