Why not? You think he's raising on 44 here? Ok, he might shove because he's an idiot, but 95% of the time a player holding 4s is folding here.

I have no problem with the call after he shoves. But you're talking about the hand like its the nuts. Why slowplay it? Its ONE pair. He could catch up on later streets (of course, we're assuming the player doesn't have 44 here).

judging by the few hands i had seem him play, he was betting the flop regardless of what he had - jamming maybe not, but definitely betting.

as a result, i thought a check-raise would have been the best way to go

A check-raise rarely gets respect from someone who is attracted to shiny things. It just looks like more shiny things.

You've read Super System, what does it say about bad players?
